I know this has probably been covered before,

and I read some of the posts in the archives

concerning poultry. But can someone give

me a rundown of when buying meats, what

you can consider to be OK? One question is

ground beef. Are there any illegal things to

be on the lookout for?

With the chicken, if it says it may have retained

water, is that OK? At the store today, I could

only find Nature's Promise...they were out of

Bell & .

We used to buy ground turkey and prefer that

over beef, but it says it has natural flavorings,

so I stopped buying it...

but how do I go about getting legal ground turkey?

I've also read all the posts about bacon, but I'm

a bit confused. Somewhere I thought I read Gwaltney

without sugar was OK - but it lists nitrates in the ingredients.

Are nitrates illegal?

I did see that our local grocery store carries prosciutto

that only lists pork, salt, and pepper as ingredients.

When can something like bacon or prosciutto be introduced?

Thank You!

Hi, Diane,

First regarding bacon--SCD does not call nitrates illegal, so they

are not going to cause the gut bugs to thrive. However, it is

generally known that nitrates are not healthful and many parents of

kids on the autism spectrum are trying not to use them. So the fried

prosciutto is definitely a healthier alternative. The one you listed

sounds ok. At day three, it is too soon. Bacon will be " down the

road " . I would introduce a wide variety of peeled, cooked, de-seeded

fruits and vegetables, and probably the nut butter before I

introduced bacon.

For other meats you want to read labels and ask questions. There

should be no additives in the meat, except water. I think the one

with the " retained water " is ok.

I hope someone who buys legal ground turkey will tell you where. I

tried to get my supermarket to grind chicken for me and they said

they weren't allowed to. Some people grind their own.

I want to say I agree with about nitrates. For

one, they aggravate my arthritis and in many people

they cause problems like headaches and other things

that could be confused as food reactions.

There is also a relationship between consumption of

processed meats and incidence of childhood leukemia.

I too hope someone will tell me where to get ground

turkey! The packaged stuff at the store has flavorings

added. Well, I used to buy that stuff before SCD and I

can tell you the flavoring did not help at all. Plain

ground turkey is flavorless and blah. :)

Diane,

I get the ground sirloin patties at Costco. I am

pretty sure they are just meat. I've never seen a

ground beef with an additives list.

I get Tyson chicken breasts at Costco. They come in

big bags and the breasts are now individually wrapped

in plastic (they used to not be wrapped within the

bag). On the ingredients list is only kosher salt and

water. But many people have told me that you really

have to check, that a lot of Tyson's products have

added broth. You can't have any kind with added broth

or flavorings.

And yeah, I can't find ground turkey either. :)

Someone told me on my blog that there is a legal

prosciutto at Costco. I am going to look today.

I responded to 's response about nitrates so you

will see that.

I found two legal brands of Prosciutto at a Canadian Costco, got sick from the

Kosher

chicken which is fed corn, soy, barley and canola oil.

Australian lamb chops at Costco are unbeatable.

I found the legal prosciutto at Costco today...it is

out of my price range (SIGH). I just can't pay $16 for

12 oz of meat. Even ground chuck/round at more than $3

a pound is too much for me to spend.

I hope the Costco chicken is not bothering me. With

me, it is hard to tell.

I hate being poor sometimes. I just think ahead, to

the raise I am promised and that better job on the

horizon!!

Hi,

I've bought ground turkey from the butcher at Whole Foods on more than

one occasion. I see it there most times. Maybe they don't carry it

all Whole Foods...?
