Guest guest
We tried the carrot chips, and my daughter absolutely loves these because she always did like crunchy salty snacks. But is it OK to eat these during stage one? Just wondering because they are cooked in oil - is this considered a fried food? Is it possible to get a crunchy carrot chip using a food dehydrator? I know several people on this list have mentioned food dehydrators, and just wondering how you use them, what types of food you dehydrate? Guest guest
Hi Diane, It depends on her symptoms. The state of her stools diarrhea/constipation? Does she have fat ,malabsorption etc... Guest guest
Hi Sheila - Yes, she does have malabsorption - she has anemia. Hemoglobin is low. Her tests back in June '07 showed narrowing of illeum. She has had trouble gaining any weight. We hope SCD will help us to gain weight. Our naturopath was concerned about SCD that she would not get enough calories. I need to make sure she is getting enough daily calories. I am making her smoothies twice each day with ripe banana and diluted grape juice and mashed pear or apple, and adding 1T. coconut oil for calories/fat- I would like to add avocado for that too. She is not having diarrhea now- but at one point before diet, she was having a bit of blood in her stool on rare occasions that I could see- she could possibly have tiny amounts of blood in the stool that are not visible. Other problem is that her GI wants to do another colonoscopy REAL SOON. I hate to have to give her Miralax right now and go through an invasive procedure....so if I can get any kind of weight gain or improvement in her blood work, I am hoping her GI will give us more time to do what we are doing with SCD. He wants to put her on tube feeds. From what I read that Elaine wrote about SCD, it does the same thing that an elemental diet does. Thank you for any input. Guest guest
Hi Sheila - One more thing, forgot to tell you her IGG food allergy test showed a moderate reaction to eggs, mild to cow's milk. So we are doing no eggs on this diet which is making the recipes, calories harder. Thank You, Diane D. 11yr dd Crohn's dx 6/07 SCD stage 1 Re: Carrot Chips and food dehydrators Hi Diane, It depends on her symptoms. The state of her stools diarrhea/constipation? Guest guest
Dear Diane, What I am about to say is the result of a LOT of self-doubt and ending up regretting some decisions. Please remember that as far as your GI doc and your child go, YOU have the final say in what is or is not done at any given time. If you would like to implement SCD a little longer and put off that procedure, it is YOUR decision to make. In spite of how much I value the advice and input of those handling my child's medical care, it took me a long time to realize that sometimes we, as parents, know more about what is appropriate for our children than any doctor. Follow your instincts, and voice your opinions. Your doctor may end up learning something from YOU. Your child is fortunate to have a mom who is willing to work as hard for healing as you.
