What " hurts " is my acupuncturist finding the " spots. " I filled out a multi-page questionnaire about what my problems were, and then he asked where it hurt, and I told him. He had me lie down and began prodding along the " meridians " as they're called. He'd find a spot, and I'd yelp, " Ouch! " and he'd ask cheerfully, " Sensitive? " as he tapped a needle in. There is a momentary sting as the needle goes in, and then it doesn't hurt. When my Shadow had his treatment, the vet laid out the needles on the table, and I darn near had heart failure. The needles looked like they were four inches long! (They were actually less than two.) The only thing I could think of was, " She's going to stick those into my Shadow-goof?!?! " (Remember, he's my fur-child!) I guess my eyes must have been about the size of saucers, because she picked up one needle and said, " Now this location is for analgesia (pain relief) and anesthesia (sleep). She tapped it in, and I felt Shadow completely relax in my arms, and his eyes sort of glazed over and half-closed. He then stood there while she did the rest of the treatment. When I brought him in, I had to carry my 30 pound Shadow-Galoot (he is a standard dachshund, not a miniature -- that's all muscle!) in because his shoulder was so painful, he could put no weight on it at all, and the jarring of running on three legs hurt, too. He walked out of the vet's office on all four legs. We did four weekly treatments, then two, two weeks apart, two, three weeks apart, and now we're going to try for six weeks apart. So far, so good. The objective is to get to three months, then six months between treatments, and then to finally just have a once a year maintenance treatment. For myself, the results weren't quite as dramatic because the issues I'm dealing with have been there for 25 years or more. I can tell you that, for the first time in all that time, I do not have a dull ache in my back. For the first time in five years, I am able to sleep through the night. Prior to my water therapy and the acupuncture, I had to keep a dose of pain medicine (the alternatives to codeine that I found) by the bed so that when, not if, when, I woke up with my hips and back throbbing, I could gulp it down and hope it would kick in quickly enough for me to get the rest of the night's sleep. Now, I can actually go to bed in anticipation of a full night's sleep. It's pretty fabulous. — Marilyn New Orleans, Louisiana, USA Undiagnosed IBS since 1976, SCD since 2001 Darn Good SCD Cook No Human Children Shadow & Sunny Longhair Dachshund
