Guest guest
Hello! Some weeks ago there was some discussion about how to travel and eat SCD. I would like to contribute this little tidbit. Two weeks ago my husband and I traveled from Europe to the USA to visit my family in Texas. I called United beforehand to verify what types of food would be allowed. They assured me that " mashed " types of foods would be legal with TSA (important for me since I still digest veggies best blended up.) We went through Europe flawlessly. Security did briefly check our carry-on suitcase of food, and we explained why we had to have it. Upon arriving in the USA, we did have to throw away all of our beef and any raw veggies, though. We found out that chicken would have been allowed, but not our cooked hamburger patties. Since I had talked to the airline and since I assumed the airline regulations were international rules, I assumed the same foods would work FROM the USA since things were so flawless TO the USA. We were really shocked when the guy at DFW said we couldnt have any cheeses and nothing creamy. He was insistent that we just check our entire carry-on that had food in it. He didnt want to take the time for us to sort through it and insisted that we check it all. We had to explain that we eat every 2 hours and would be away from our home for 24 hours. He was quite annoyed but allowed us to go to a TSA lady who went through all of our food and had us take out our mashed veggies, nut butters, solid coconut oil (but not the cheeses because they were hard). From Chicago, they hardly even blinked at our carry ons... It was NO big deal in the least. I am thinking that it is really the luck of the draw... which security/TSA people are checking your things. Good luck to you all who are traveling in this season! -
Guest guest
Thanks for your story . I will be flying within the US (from Ohio to Oklahoma) to see my baby brother graduate from Army basic training here in a few months and I am so worried about what foods I will have access to. I have to eat every 2-3 hours as well. I will be flying through DFW, and it seems like they gave you the most trouble (although like you said it was probably luck of the draw with who was on duty that day). Nonetheless, I'm worried I'll have nothing to eat. You said they made you throw away all of your beef? What forms were they? I was planning on bringing beef jerky. I also use banana as a staple. You mentioned raw veggies were a no, any ideas about raw fruit being okay or not? What type of chicken was it that would have been okay? I'm just really worried about what to bring, it seems there is no consistent ruling on this. :-( K Dayton, Ohio, USA SCD since June 2006, redid intro June 2007 Myself and 2 kids are SCD, hubby is finally and ever so slowly transitioning to it. Guest guest
Part of it could have been she was bringing beef into the USA from another country. Traveling into the USA with food would be more of a challenge than within the USA I would think. SCD 1-
Guest guest
The beef and veggies are completely fine within the USA. You just have issues with them if you are flying internationally. Since you are travelling within the USA, pretty much anything would be OK... just not liquids. My point of bringing up the story was that they didnt allow Nut Butter, hard coconut oil or mashed cooked veggies at DFW. At DFW, no food with a " creamy " consistency was allowed yesterday. But all of our chicken, beef, buffalo patties, carrots, etc made it through. I just shouldnt have blended the zucchini and squash. Another point I should bring up... if you are just catching a connecting flight at DFW, then you probably wont have to go through security again... and thus you wouldnt run into those problems. I was just so bummed about DFW not letting us take nut butter from DFW to Chicago. My husband really relies on that huge dose of fat and protein! On ALL of our 6 flights in the past two weeks, we have had a pretty large carry-on bag with wheels. It was filled to the brim with food. We had about 15 pounds of food, i would imagine. Huge bag of baby carrots, lettuce, celery, clementines, etc for my husband, and 4 boxes of cooked meat patties for me. We also called the airline and ordered a fruit plate instead of the regular plane food... though I think that is mainly for international flights as well. Good luck! -kelly > > > > Hello! Guest guest
The creamy food thing is a nationwide restriction. It counts as liquids. There are more restrictions from places like Hawaii and also international travel. We will be flying domestically but we won't be able to bring anything like applesauce or blended foods or nut butters. Nut butter brownies are a good way to smuggle it. LOL. I'm still terribly nervous. I want to put applesauce and legal mayo in my checked luggage. I think that will be OK. B.
