Guest guest
Hi there, I'm soooo confused. It's sounding like most everyone here only takes Prenatals and no other vitamins? I'm feeling very nervous b/c regularly take a vitamin supplement (from a nutritionist since GP in 1997) and my OB/GYN has advised me NOT to go off those vitamins and NOT to take prenatals b/c it'd be an OverDose of Vitamin B12. So scared...what if that's not the right advice? > > > > > > Before getting pregnant, I took a Flinstone's chewable everyday; > now > > my OB has me on a regular (you know swallow the horse pill!) > prenatal > > vitamin. Guest guest
you can't really get an overdose of B12 as my OB told me it was water soluable and any excess is just pee'd out. It seems that MOST women in here take a prenatal AND the reg GBP vitamins. My not doing that caused me MANY problems post delivery. The fat soluable vitamins are ADE and K. Vit A is especialy harmful to the developing fetus. The water soulable vits are just peed out without problems according to my OB. Sheila I even took extra folic acid 1,200mcg because who REALLY knows how much is absorbed and how much is malabsorbed. Excess is peed out. Too much Vit A is bad for you and you should take your iron supplements with orange juice to enhance it's absorption. Guest guest
, Sorry so long in replying. I had some severe nausea and anything near the end of the pg wasn't tolerated well. (esp plain water). After delivery -c-section- I lost alot of blood. My hgb was 7,2 the morning after delivery and steadily dropped to 6 (half my normal blood volume). I tried to take my vits but they came back up the last 2 mos of pg. Throughout the pg, ALL of my teeth decalcified, I've had 6 abscessed teeth, 3 pulled plus 2 root canals and am in need of about 12 more fillings. I also have severe bone pain and they thought I may have leukemia, and they were considering a hysterectomy, a bone marrow biopsy and colonoscopy to see if I have been losing blood or if I hadn't been producing enough red blood cells. After 7 different MD's, *I* found on the internet that Elavil can cause bone marrow suppression in rare cases (raises hand). The aches and pain they attributed to *fibromyalgia* (the diagnosis when they can't find a real diagnosis). I have had 23 IV iron infusions so far, my hgb is back up to 12.3 and I may or may not take any more. You can't take oral iron and IV iron at the same time, so I am trying to decide what to do next. I have a close friend who developed " nutritional neuropathy " after the GBP and was in a wheelcfhair and couldn't walk for nearly 2 years. She had to learn to walk all over again. So, from these 2 rare (I suppose) cases, it is EXTREMELY important and vital to get in your vitamins, but you must research, because some of the fat soluable vits can be stored in your fatty tissue and cause severe complications (vit A is a good example). Hope this helps. In hindsight, I would see a nutritionist twice a month for blood work etc. I know this seems excessive, but I wish I had done so. Guest guest
My doctor told me that if you take too many vitamins the body gets rid of the extras through the urine. So, take it light, be pregnant ad enjoy. have a good one girls Anita > > > Date: 2004/11/12 Fri PM 03:46:37 EST > To: OSSG-pregnant > Subject: Re: Question about Prenatals? Guest guest
That is not true for every vitamin --- some are water soluble and some are fat soluble. Some can build up to toxic levels (Iron for one). Ferguson Rasley mailto:dferguson@... Re: Question about Prenatals? SO Confused > >
