Hi all,Does anyone have any advice on long term use of the above with kids through regular pharmacies like CVS? I have been having problems with Lee Silsby. I recently found out that the azithromycin and augmentin/amoxicillan suspensions they were giving us for strep infections was going out of date several days before we finished the treatment (ie they were saying it was good for 14-17 days when actually the suspension was good for only 10days). I am wondering if this is why my kids had 3 back to back strep (with culture positive) infections!! Pretty annoyed right now with them. Plus they keep forgetting to send our valacyclovir suspension and it is not good to miss a dose of this. So I have been thinking about just going through CVS for these because the stress with LS and money is stressing me

out.Problem i am noticing with with azithromycin through CVS is there is aspartame in it and some other junk in augmentin. Have non compounded antibs been a problem for others? Does anyone have any good ideas how i can get around/find "cleaner" non compounded antibs or recs on other good compounding pharmacies in the US (preferably that submit to insurance). My son just did IVIG so he will be on augmentin for at least a year and my daughter is now on prophylactic azith to prevent more strep/pandas flares until we decide whether or not to do IVIG. For the valacyclovir, i was thinking i would just wipe off the black letters and crush it up and give to my son because from what i understand compounding pharmacies cannot get the source powder for this/valtrex anyway.Any thoughts/advice would be much appreciated!!And Happy New

Year!!

The mylan brand of valacyclovir doesn't have blue coating so I used it for a

while. But then I switched to brand valtrex and just wash off the coating. My

son does have more stimming and yeasty behavior but there is no

generic/completely dye free or excipient version of valacyclovir. Even

compounding pharmacies just wash off the blue dye before crusching the tablet,

measuring the exact dose and packing it into capsules. This is the information

given to me by two pharmacists from two major compounding pharmacies. Some of

them use the Mylan brand to prepare the capsules but even though it doesn't have

blue dye, it still contains other ingredients like polyethylene glycol etc. So I

agree with u that u can just wash off the coating and use the valtrex (I felt my

son had better results with the brand valtrex as compared to the Mylan

valacyclovir). I asked my dan about valtrex/valacyclovir flaring yeast and he

stated that he believes that children actually react to the excipients in it

rather than actually having yeast. I don't necessarily agree as I believe that

my son is definitely dealing with yeast but also has a reaction to some of the

ingredients in the valtrex tablets.

I am not sure about azithromycin though. When my son was on azithromycin, I just

got the white one from one of the pharmacies and specifically asked for a dye

free one. I do get the fluconazole compounded as the commercial diflucan

contains the orange flavor. Didn't see much difference though. He still has good

and bad days. I also get vancomycin compounded from coastal compounding in

Atlanta. Coastal compounding doesn't submit to insurance but provide a receipt

that u can submit to insurance. I get diflucan compounded by hopewell pharmacy

in NJ and so far no issues. Hopewell does accept insurance.

Valtrex and valacyclovir will never be a clean compound. It can't be formulated in any compounding pharmacy. They simply crush it and add it to suspension. In the case of Valtrex, they will wash of the dye, usually for an added fee.

Valtrex switches the immune system from TH1 to TH2, which is why yeast is an issue.

If you think Valtrex is an causing an issue, switch to another antiviral. You still Famvir and Zovirax to choose from. Zovirax must be dosed more often though.
