Guest guest
This is a fantastic article with two main issues. One is Ibuprofen. Turmeric is also an NO mopper uppper, so I use it instead of Ibuprofen. I have used Ibuprofen in the past for a wrist injury, and it destroyed my gut. So, I can not support Ibuprofen. But, Turmeric has helped my and my children's guts. The second thing is that tickborne infections need to be mentioned because they are a main contributor that the successful docs know about. I studied countless hours on the causes of autism, and I am telling you that tickborne infections are a main contributor. But, it appears that ridding viruses enable the body to rid bacteria, and ridding bacteria enable the body to rid viruses; therefore, it's impossible to blame one more than the other. Guest guest
I don't know how much turmeric is appropriate for children other than my own, but my 96-lb., 14-year-old son has been doing well on 300 mg. of turmeric, 3x per day. So a total of 900 mg., which isn't a huge amount. Donna > > Heidi: > Its great that you find turmeric to be of help. What was the " dose " and frequency of turmeric used? Guest guest
Just wanted to add that it's always a good idea to " start out low and go slow. " I started ds with one 300 mg. capsule at breakfast for the first week, observed how it affected him, then went up to one a breakfast and one with dinner the next week, then one with breakfast, one when he gets home from school, and one with dinner after that. I'm thinking of giving one more at bedtime and seeing how that goes. I read that as much as 10,000 mg of turmeric can be taken safely by an adult, so 1200 mg a day for a 96-lb boy isn't much at all. Guest guest
Donna, Our Autism Oxalate Project at ARI measured the oxalate content of turmeric and it 2184 mgs per 100 grams. That mean 22 mgs per gram and you are almost that high with your taking three capsules a day. We tested curcumin, which is the active ingredient in turmeric that provides all those benefits, and it instead has 7.6 mgs per 100 grams. If you are unfamiliar with the connection between autism and oxalate please see: http://usautism.org/content/PDF_files_newsletters/oxalate_and_autism.pdf. Also, you can find out about how much better children with autism have done on a low oxalate diet which keeps oxalate below 40-60 mgs/day/2000 calories at Trying_Low_Oxalates . People take Enhansa (curcumin) to try to reduce oxidative stress, but in the database I've made over more than ten years of Great Plains organic acid tests, looking at 600 of these tests, the oxalate level correlate with the key marker of oxidative stress (pyroglutamate) with a statistical significance of p<.0000001. You can't really get more significant than that! Oxalate being high is shown in numerous studies in the medical literature as causing tremendously high levels of oxidative stress, lipid peroxidation, and mitochondrial dysfunction and problems with the gut are also a common occurance in those with oxalate problems. Considering the chart in the autism study on the fourth page, it is very reasonable to think oxalate levels like this could be the cause of oxidative stress in most of these children, whose levels of oxalate in blood and urine looked nothing like control levels. Why would anyone want to bypass looking into this issue of oxalate when the science in this area is so compelling? Why not investigate? At least this is something that as a parent, you can control. Just use curcumin! . > > > > > > Heidi: > > > Its great that you find turmeric to be of help. What was the " dose " and frequency of turmeric used? Did you give it dissolved in plain water? Guest guest
I have to agree that a lot of people say they see improvements on low oxalates, but so do people taking turmeric, so I guess that puts us all at a quandry. The reason I don't do curcumin is because of the chemical contamination when it's separated from the turmeric. So, just saying, be wary of this contamination, and look for supplements of curcumin without it (which will be difficult), if you are choosing curcumin. The low oxalate diet is not a must for recovery, but neither is anything specific. There are many ways to rebuild the immune system. Thus, you can choose what you have time for, can afford, have access to, etc. We eat organic here with no wheat. Works wonders for us, but since I have not tried the low oxalate diet, I can not compare. I do know that next to the no gluten, organic diet, low oxalate is the next popular, so it must be working as well. Guest guest
The Great Plains lab has the OAT testing for oxalates. With an interpretation of test results. The are several correlates that help determine oxalates from bacteria, high vitamin c intake, arabinose (candida) and oxalic acid, plus others. I have the oxalates food list on my frigerator for past 4 years. My docs don't always know about oxalates but the OAT always show it for my son. Turmeric is not on my list, so thank you. However I did have the THI and TH2 testing which shows which part of the immune system is affected, my son showed hyper immune to both. That list of foods and supplements are to be avoided, and turmeric was definitely on that list. For reference, my doc told us to give it, which messed up my sons immune system so badly that his poop turned yellow and he became vowel incontinent at age 11. Please be careful with oxalates and TH1/2. See Book by Kharrazian to get list of foods and supplements that affect immune system dysfunction by either testing Cytokine Panel or CD4/CD8 Ratio Profile. Guest guest
Just checked -- what I am giving my son is Turmeric EXTRACT, not straight Turmeric. Turmeric extract is 95% curcumin, or 265 mg. of curcumin per 300 mg. capsule. But I think I will just buy pure curcumin when it's time to get more. Guest guest
Just to clarify. We were doing klinghardt and it was expensive since my whole family got treated. to save money, we changed to a chiropractor that uses Kharrazian protocol (but used several supplements that kicked my sons immune system into overdrive). So we went to dr Yu on east coast. Only took dr Yu 2 visits to get my son back. Dr k uses a lot of immune modulating protocols so that our kids immune systems don't shut Down Hypo or go into overdrive (Hyper). We were very happy with dr k, but the state of NC is far away, and does not allow compounding pharmacies to ship to us. We are moving to Ca in May so we can go to dr k again. We really like Dr. Yu as well. He uses alot dr. K's protocol. My son has heavy metal, parasite, Lyme, erlichiosos, viral infections, and hyper immune system. Dr k. Says go low and go slow. Guest guest
Curcumin is really bad for my son. Whe I was giving it to him he became violent, very clumsy, hyper, his face and ears were flush and he was acting completely psychotic, he would said things like I am going to kill you. I will never give that a try in any kind of form. > > > I have to agree that a lot of people say they see improvements on low oxalates, but so do people taking turmeric, so I guess that puts us all at a quandry. Guest guest
That is phenol sensitivity. My son is not that verbal but he had similar symptoms. He definitely was a responder to it and had positives which lasted about a month and then we saw the negatives. Phenols have a cumulative effect. Most of the kids on ASD have phenolsulfotransferase deficiency and the symptoms usually develop when the enzyme is completely saturated. That is the reason I saw great results initially. I tried to use no fenol, epsom salt baths and magnesium sulfate cream but at this point my son's metabolism is not fixed and he cannot handle phenols. I will keep looking for ways to fix the PST deficiency and be able to use curcumin as it was such an excellent anti inflammatory for my kid. is > > > > > I have to agree that a lot of people say they see improvements on low oxalates, but so do people taking turmeric, so I guess that puts us all at a quandry.
