Guest guest
Aaliyah, I breastfed my first without difficulty, of course, I was as large as a Jersey cow, so it wasn't hard. After WLS and 145# wt loss, I didn't produce much milk. It was the consistency of skim milk with 1 cup of water added to it. No nutrients at all. My son was born weighing 6#9 oz, lost down to 6# 2 oz and 2 weeks later on breastmilk exclusively, he was still 6# 2oz. The Dr said we gave a valiant effort, but we had to move on to formula. 6 formulas later, his tummy settled with Nutramigen. He also had to take Zantac for the first year of life. *sigh* He's now a 34 " , 34#, 2 yr old! lol (2 tomorrow!) You gave it a try, but not everyone can breastfeed post WLS. Thats just the plain fact of the matter. I desperately wanted to, but his health was much more important than my want. Sheila
Guest guest
Aaliyah, Breastfeeding is so subjective that blaming problems on just one thing, i.e. weight loss surgery would probably not solve all your problems. I am breastfeeding my daughter, Hannah (6 months) and have had problems with supply the whole time. I can tell you that I wish that I had never given that first bottle as I believe if I had just stuck it out that everything would have worked out. My ped doc was concerned that Hannah had not made it back to her birth weight within the first month but I honestly don't think he was taking into consideration that breastfed babies gain differently than formula fed babies. The best way to make sure that they are doing ok is to make sure they are having enough wet/soiled diapers and if the look/act normal. There is a group for breastfeeding after wls, I think its called ossg-breastfeeding or something like that, check it out. I wish you the best of luck and always keep in mind some breastmilk is better than none if you can make it happen. Congrats on your little one! A. breastfeeding Hi all Baby am is doing wonderfully since her birth on October 9th. I took her to the doctor for her first checkup yesterday and she had only gained 3 ounces since her discharge from the hospital. I had suspected that my milk wouldn't be enough for her and I was right. I'm eating healthy foods and everything but the doc said it's just not enough for her. So now I'm supplementing with formula. My doc is so nice - she said not to worry or feel guilty about giving am the bottle. I had wanted to breastfeed exclusively but there's a trade off with this surgery I guess. Does this happen to everyone then or is it just happening with some of us? Guest guest
Hi I don't feel too bad since there ARE trade offs. Her health is more important of course! Basically my milk is like skim milk too. I have enough milk just not enough sustenance in it. Oh well. She was born at 7 lbs 9.7 oz and went down to 7 lb 1 oz when we left the hospital. Over the past week and a half she's only put on 3 ounces so the doc was right to tell me that I needed to supplement more with formula. I'm glad I'm not alone! My baby was born on Oct. 6 and when she went in for her two week check-up, she still had not regained her birthweight. The doctor said we'll check her again in another two weeks. I asked him if he thought she wasn't getting enough milk because of my WLS and of course he couldn't really say anything except we'll keep an eye on her. She is eating well, every two hours or sooner, and is filling up her diapers, so those are both good signs. Of course, I haven't been able to pump yet because I'm still way too sore. So, when I take her back in next week, if she still hasn't gained " enough " weight, it looks like I will have to start supplementing with formula as well. <sigh> Mommy to Duel 5/28/97, Caitlin 1/13/99, and Caris Marie 10/06/04 12/11/01 Open RNY
