Guest guest
My son also for past three night has bin getting up at 3am(not started any new things) it must be the full moon effect and parasitesSent from my iPod Hi everyone, I started my son on 5htp three days ago and now we are dealing with insomnia. We started it based on oat results as his Quinolinic/5HIAA ratio is high although quinolinic is normal but 5HIAA levels are below the mean. So we started to supplement 5htp to increase 5hiaa and to improve the ratio but so far it is causing a lot of sleep disturbance. This morning he probably woke up around 3 am. He is still awake past midnight and there is no sign of sleep. I know that insomnia is a known side effect of 5htp but is there anything that I need to do differently to add 5htp? Or is the sign that I should stop it right away? Thanks is
Guest guest
My guess is that somehow he may have a breakdown in the serotonin pathway. 5htp is a precursor to serotonin, which is a precursor to melatonin. I'm totally guessing, but if there was a breakdown in that pathway, the serotonin could not. Maybe it is just temporary during adjustment. Or maybe it is worth taking a deeper look into what may be impacting the pathway. RuthSent from my iPhone Hi everyone, I started my son on 5htp three days ago and now we are dealing with insomnia. Guest guest
I'd make sure you are not deficient in niacin & folic because they are involved creating seratonin. Guest guest
is, You could split the dosage in half and make sure you give it before 5:00 pm every day. I would also add Melatonin at night right before bed and see how he does. After a couple of weeks if he is doing okay, you can try to up the dosage to what you are doing now. Hope that is helpful. Guest guest
Do you recommend any specific testing Ruth? Or the OAT is enough? , is it ok to supplement Inositol hexaniacinate for the B3? I have my son on a multivitamin but seems like he needs more. Do you supplement both multivitamins and Bs separately. Hydroxy B12 is a good idea. I have been slacking and need to run the Yasko testing asap. Thanks is > > > Hi everyone, > > > > I started my son on 5htp three days ago and now we are dealing with insomnia. Guest guest
Thanks Lori. I am currently using 50 mg of 5htp and have been giving it around 8 pm. I now recall my naturopath suggesting the same when we tried the 5htp last time. We used to give 50 mg at 5 pm and 50 mg at night. That was two years ago. I will try using it around 5 tonight and see how it affects him. My son is already on melatonin and that was the perfect solution for him. We added 5htp for his anxiety, difficult transition and mood swings. It was suggested on his OAT by a high quinolinic/5HIAA ratio. I thought 50 mg was a lower dose already but seems like I will have to restart from 25 mg. Guest guest
I would not rely on the inositol, but I don't really know. Niacin and folapro work well for Heyward - he takes 5 mg Prozac & 25 mg 5HTP daily. He had similar results on OAT Sent from my iPhone Do you recommend any specific testing Ruth? Guest guest
You should be able to see it in the OAT or the ONE test. We supplement the hydroxy b-12 at the same time as the 5-mthf. And, one time/day we also supplement the multi at the same time. We don't use any other b vit's. HTH, RuthSent from my iPad Do you recommend any specific testing Ruth? Guest guest
Thank and Ruth. According to his oat, the suggestions were 5htp, inositol hexaniacinate to prevent flush caused by regular niacin, B6, Mg and biopterin. Is there any harm in trying inositol hexaniacinate for niacin?
