I feel really crazy for asking this question and it took me a while to

finally just give in and ask, but my question is, I have never had normal

periods,

there would be times where I went 4 to 5 months at a time with no periods

and maybe 5 months straight with a period. So until now, I have seem to be

trying to have regular periods. But my question is, does our period supposed to

come on every month at the exact same time? like say every 15th, etc., of the

month are we supposed to get a period exactly on that date? And also do we

usually ovulate 14 days before our period or every 14 days after? Please don't

make me feel stupid and if I got my theory all mixed up, correct me please.

I'm trying to learn what I was never taught.

Moderator's note:

Mika,

Most women have regular cycles; many occurring every 28 days. I use 28 days

as an example b/c that is what most OB-GYN offices use when calculating due

dates of babies. Myself, for example, started my period every 28 days. Of course

with some months being 30 days, some 31, I didn't start the same day every

month, but rather every 28 days. If your periods have never been regular, and

you are wanting to conceive, you can discuss this with your Dr. Have you ever

kept a record or journal of your periods (what age you were when they started,

how often you have them, how long they last, how heavy or light they are?).

There are medications they can give you to make you start your period. They make

a medication for everything. lol

And you are kind of correct. If your cycle is 28 days, half of that is 14, so

the theory is if you are ovulating correctly, you should ovulate 2 weeks (14

days) after your period starts. If your cycles are correct, that will also be 14

days before your period starts. Make sense?

14 days before your period is the same time as 14 days after your period.

Lets say you start your period on Nov 1st. Textbook says you should ovulate

on/around the 14th (this would be the fertile time to get pregnant). 2 weeks

after you ovulate, you either have a period or a positive preg test.

I hope I havent' confused you moreso. An excellent book to read is by Toni

Weschler called " Taking Charge of Your Fertility " for either now or when you

think you want to think about having a baby. It's an excellent book!

:)

Sheila

My cycles always varied up to 45 days...

I always got my period about 14 days after ovulation.

I charted my CM (cervical mucus).. sounds gross.. I know.

Usually the day I got the " clump " was Ovulation day and sure enough.. about

14 days later I would get my period.

So.. trying to get pg.. go for the gold on the super slick days.. :)

Mika, nobody's periods are exactly alike, so that is a tough question.

Some people are regular as clockwork not exactly what day they start,

whether it is a set number of cycle days or a day of the month or week.

The " average " cycles usually range from 28-31 days for those that have

fairly consistent ones. My cycles varied from 26-41 days. HTH

Also the books Sheila mentioned " Taking Charge of Your Fertility " is

great. They also have a software program called " Ovusoft " that works

great for tracking your periods and can use your history (once you have

put some in) to predict ovulation and periods, etc. I have been using

it just to track my period because I was so irregular so I didn't use

all the features it has to track fertility, but even that worked since

now I am pregnant and I knew before I was even due to start my period.
