Echolalia and fatigue with valtrex???

Hi everyone,

I started my son on valtrex about 5 weeks ago. First he was on 250 3x day for 3

weeks and then 500 mg 3x day for the last two weeks. I do see improvement in his

social skills and he is more verbal. But he also got a lot of echolalia. If I

say something, he repeats it three times like if I say like " Do you want to

eat " , he will say yes and then will keep on repeating do you want to eat at

least 3 times. The other thing I have noticed is he can sit in a session for 20

min max and then he will get really tired. We took him to a park recently and he

was getting very tired of walking and wanted to sit down everywhere. I

personally felt that it was some form of die off or viral clearing and he feels

fatigued because of it. Since I am seeing gains also, I didn't feel like I

needed to change the dose. But my dan suggested that a dose of 500 mg may be a

little too high for him and I should go back to 250-350 mg 3x daily. Valtrex

modulates adenosine and if adenosine is reduced too much, it is not available

for ATP production also. He does look weak these days and these symptoms started

after I went up on the dose. He also got a flare in his anxiety and ocd on the

higher dose. I have him on vancomycin for clostridia now and he is responding.

So now I am wondering that is it just a period that will pass in the next few

weeks or I should reduce the dose? I know a lot of kids go thru healing

regression and as per Stan Kurtz paper, the regression could last upto 50 days.

This makes me more inclined towards using a higher dose for at least a few more

weeks and if completing 2 months of treatment does not get rid of healing

regression, then I should probably reduce the dose. All the opinions will be

appreciated. Please share your experience with the valtrex dose and the

positives and negatives you observed and the time period during which you saw

worsening.

Thanks
