Hi My name is Gerri. I have 3 kids and I am pregnant with my first since a lap RNY. I had gestational diabetes with my last 2 pregnancies so I did not really think much about having the glucose test, just assumed I would have to. First they do a test where you take a drink and they check your level once a while after you finish the drink. That did not go too badly. A little queasy but tolerable. That result came back slighty high at 144 so they did the 3 hour glucose tolerance test(GTT) and that is a similar thing with a blodd draw and then a drink but there are more grams of glucose in it and then you go back every hour for three hours. I thought I was going to DIE the first hour and a half or so(just sick as a dog). After that I was feeling pretty beaten. When I headed back for my final blood draw I started feeling absolutely horrible....weak, sweaty, dizzy: just felt like I could pass out at any moment. They made me lie down until I felt more myself. Later that day... they said my first hour result was extrememly HIGH at like 270 or something. The second hour result was in the 70's I think and the third was in the 50's. I guess because liquid goes through the pouch so quickly the sudden onset of a large amount of glucose causes your body to produce a high amount of insulin to counteract that but then you have this LARGE amount of insulin and no more glucose so then it wipes out your glucose levels and you end up with EXTREMELY low glucose which is why I felt like I might pass out. They told me I was very lucky I did not. They determined that the 3 hour GTT is not an accurate test for someone with the gastric bypass and they have done the 2 hour post prandial(after eating a regular meal) twice since and my sugar levels have been fine. The baby is also A LOT more " normal sized " than my other two were. My first baby was 8 lb 1 oz. The second(my first with gestational diabetes) was 9 lb 13 oz. The third(also with gestational diabetes) was 10 lb 9 oz. (In case you do not know gestational diabetes can cuase large babies!) They have estimated this baby at about 7 1/2-8 1/2 lbs, so I am kind of excited about that and a LOT more comfortable at 38 weeks than I have been in a long time. I would keep my experience in mind when deciding on the 3 hour test. It was horrible but also completely inaccurate because the way the glucose flows into our system too fast. Luck and laughter Gerri 38 weeks Boston, Massachusetts
