Just a note about FLMA - it doesn't cover all employers. Check the link someone

listed here and it will go through specifically who it covers but I know this

was a BIG issue for me when I had my WLS. My employer is too small to be

covered and we have a specific policy that limits acceptable unpaid time off

amounts. According to our policies - they could have let me go when I asked for

the time off for my surgery. Fortunately, they didn't but I was aware of the

possibility of losing my job when I told them about it and was prepared to deal

with it if that was the outcome.
