Guest guest
This insurance denial is a Pet Peeve of mine. I may begin my very own crusade someday. My husband had a Pet scan after surgery, but it was originally denied and the Onc. called and got it approved. That Pet Scan showed a Hypermetabolic (4.7SUV) iliac Lymph node around the belly button that could be post-op inflamation or carcinoma. After chemo, I asked the Onc if he would be doing a scan to check the " suspicious " lymph node and he looked back at the 1st Pet and said he could get a PET approved based on the Lymph node. Well, insurance denied and finally approved a CAT scan when the onc. called. Who is this " Doctor " or as they call them " Physician Consultant # xxxx " that sits in some office and decides what my husband needs. Probably a " Doctor " that is not fit or able to maintain a private practice so he has to work for an insurance company. How can I even check that " Doctor's " credentials as I have every Dr. we have seen. It is ridiculous that this is going on. And I just got good news from my insurance. They have a new program which is voluntary (thank goodness), and it puts a patient/insurance consultant, our Dr. and us together which means they might catch a medical error or omission for us. What is sounds like to me is asking them to be involved in all level of treatment and care. I am sure all our Doctors are gonna love it. Of course, everything is confidential between the 3 of us. I won't be volunteering for it. It sounded like permission for them to question every move of your Dr. If I don't trust my Dr., I will move on. Has anyone else had this new fabulous benefit added to their insurance plan? Well, I ranted enough. Guest guest
Oh Ingrid, we don't want government insurance. Trust me, we don't. We would have to wait months to see a specialist and go through a worse bureaucracy to get approval for tests. Those of us who are stage 4 wouldn't survive. With my insurance, I was in the hospital with CT scan and PET scans the very afternoon my blood work came back in a routine check. The diagnosis was 3 days later and I was choosing my own oncologist and surgeon just days after. This would not be possible with government health care. Doctors charge more when they know insurance is involved. Of course I know that is because they have to hire secretairies that do the filing for insurance who knows each specific insurance company codes. It is so sad that we cannot have a system like so many other countries. That the goverment would handle it and we all would have free medical. Just the same here we sit with all the fustrations. But at least we are lucky to have the insurance I think. Of course I sure wish they would pay more on all the treatments I have had. Ingrid > > This insurance denial is a Pet Peeve of mine. Guest guest
Yes, Ingrid. Just remember you can always appeal the insurance decision if you aren't happy with it. Also remember that if it were government provided insurance, you would have some non-qualified doctor making the same decisions on your case as in private insurance except that he/she would take multiple coffee breaks, chat all day with friends instead of working on your appeal, and go home early. Well if thats the case then maybe we are better off now here where we are. Ingrid > > > > This insurance denial is a Pet Peeve of mine. Guest guest
Hi : Yes, I had a contrast CT scan and Pet scan today. The traffic was so bad that I was about 45 minutes late. I was at the place for almost 4 hours. This time, the drink and the injected radioactive material made me sick. Since it was nearly 4 p.m. by the time I left the hospital, I went down the street (in Santa ) to eat something. Then, I got sick from eating. BTW: I sat next to Larry Hagman (remember TV's Dallas show?) and his wife. I have such a chemo brain that I knew who he was but the name didn't come to me. I think I recall he had a liver transplant. Am I right? Do you remember reading about this? Anyway, he was having a nice glass of merlot for lunch. I hope to get my results from the scans soon. Thanks for asking. Guest guest
Hi : No, I cannot work now and would not want to. I think that life is too short and I don't want to spend what is left in a courthouse. Yes, I loved my job very much and I had 20 years of lawyering. Enough, right? Truly, however, my memory is so rusty now that I am not sure I could handle the responsibility of my job. I used to handle cases with huge numbers of witnesses and 2 million documents. I don't know if I could do that again (and I don't intend to ever have to test my memory that way). I am so sick of being sick. I know you feel that way too. , where do you live? Were you stage 4 with liv er mets? I know you are 18 months post-treatment. How often are you scanned? Guest guest
I am glad to know that you are not trying to continue to practice. Thats much too hard right now. Give yourself time. You may want to do some type of volunteer legal work for a really good cause someday. And yes, there will be a someday. Keep your fightin' britches on:) I was a paralegal for some number of years for attorneys and a judge. I gave it up to raise the boys and have never regretted it. I am so thankful now that I did spend those years with them. They are 31 and 24 now. Both boys have a girl and a boy each. They are the light of my life:) I'm in Missouri. In the Ozarks, southern Missouri. I was diagnosed with Stage 3C, Grade 3 cancer in my uterus Oct. 2003. It had spread to pelvic lymph node. As a precaution they radiated my whole abdomen in case it had spread to the peri-aortic nodes. Then the chemo. Six rounds of adriamycin/cisplatin were planned. I only made it through four of them. The fifth one would have killed me....they did a CT scan then and agreed that that was enough. There was no evidence of disease. June 30 2004 my bowels completely blocked off. I've never felt such pain in my life. I couldn't walk, could barely breathe. They sent me by ambulance to my gyn/onc 100 miles away. That was a very long ride........ouch. He operated and removed 1/3 of my colon and 30 " of my small intestine plus the valve in between. I ended up weighing 84 lbs. I do good now to hold 97 and I have to eat constantly. Now i am housebound with a diarrhea that won't quit. And apparently no answers for it. I am becoming quite concerned over my care. I have not had a scan for over a year now (July 2004). My gyn/onc does a pelvic exam and pap test every four months. I am due November 2 again. I AM going to ask why I have not been getting bloodwork, scans, etc. Perhaps there is a good reason, I don't know. But it is making me nervous. CT scan with contrast is out of the question. I would have to drink it while in the machine. It will leave my body immediately. That is why I was asking about the PET scans and MRI. I'm wondering if that wouldn't be the best for me since I cannot hold anything in my gut? Listen to me ramble, good grief!!!!!!!!!!!!! Get some good rest tonight and we will all be sending up prayers for wonderful results:) nancy j >>>Hi : No, I cannot work now and would not want to.
