Guest guest
I use Tesco's quite regularly and have never had any problems with deliveries or missing items. Occasionally get substitutes - usually because they haven't got the right pack size so they put in 2 small packs instead of 1 large. Find it really useful for bulky stuff like you say - drinks, tins, toilet rolls etc! > Does anyone use this and, if so, which is the best? > > I've used both Sainsburys and Tesco in the past but all my experience is > over a year out of date now so I'd be interested to hear what people > think of the current services. >

On the first occasion I thought I was being *really cool* to order groceries when I was still in Israel and time them for delivery just before we got home (mum's carer would be home). It didn't work; the store had run out of drivers or vans, I can't remember which, so the only means of delivery was the checkout men and women taking the goods in their own cars! My goods, well, about half of what I wanted, were delivered several hours or even a day, after I got home; it would have been much quicker to have nipped out to my local store myself, it's only 2 mns away! On the second occasion I wanted a lot of bulky goods like tissues, and drinks, and was tired, so I thought I'd give the online store another try. Trouble is, when I order, the store nearest to me is the one used, which is Brent Cross, famous for being very badly stocked in things like tissues! So again I didn't get half my order. All in all a waste of time. I go shopping personally now. Ruthie

Thanks Ruthie. For me it is the bulk stuff I want to get. I like to wander (well brisk walk!) down to the shops most days and get meat and veg etc but I can't carry back beer, wine, laundry powder/tablets, loo rolls, kitchen rolls etc which I would much rather have delivered once a month or so. Or maybe I should buy myself a little shopping trolley :-)) -- Sue

My tip..if you DO order online, always put an alternative, so at least you ge SOMETHING rather than just sticking to what you really want, in which case there's a risk you wont get anything. I have had wonderful service from them, apart from once where a bag went astray and they did sort that our after a couple of phone calls. It is rare that I don't get what I want but ocassionally they run out ie last time I wanted vegetable curries (my favourite) and they were on offer I wanted 6 but they only delivered 2. The deliver service is great, once it arrived early the man offered to come back later if it was not convenient, and Saturday I opted for deliver between 12 and 2pm and it arrived at 12 on the dot. I think Tescos are the only supermarket to deliver in this area. I think C must use the same one as me with deliveries coming from the York Tadcaster store. The 2 or 3 things that were out of stock were replaced with something similar and were pointed out to me by the delivery man in case I wasn't happy with them. They arrived on time with an itemised list. I especially like the way the website stores your shopping order so you do not have to put it all back in every time. Handy if you want to order big stuff regularly. Donna Mum to (17) Kimberley(16), Kayleigh(14), (11), Kara (4) [homebirth at last]
Guest guest
Tesco for me, too. Tend to do it about once every 2 months and stock up all the bulky/heavies. The drivers are very helpful and carry it through to the kitchen if I ask. Each delivery there has been a small problem (delivered pizza base, but no sauce, type thing) and last time a bag containing cucumber, celery and 4 lemons didn't arrive. When I collected it, they'd " run out " of individual lemons and I got a bag of 7 or 8 instead. All a bit annoying, but nothing to put me off the convenience. And always prompt (usually 10 mins before delivery slot, but always offer to wait until allotted time, except the last time when they rang first nearly 2 hrs early to ask if it was convenient to come round in 5 mins) Then only thing that is a bit of a pain is that we live between 2 Tesco stores. Ordinarily I shop in the one 6 miles away (much bigger store) but the home delivery comes from the other one 9 miles away - so they don't necessarily sell all the things I usually buy. Haven't tried the others although we have Sainsbury and Iceland around here too, but then I don't shop in either of those as a rule. Guest guest
A friend of mine who had a son of 18m when her twin girls were born regularly did a Tesco on-line shop. Her real bug bear was that they never supplied anywhere near the number of tins of formula milk she asked for. She had to arrange for her DH her pick up the extra tins some other time, which was a bit of a pain. When she rang to complain, she was told that if they gave her all the tins she wanted, there'd be none on the shelf for other customers. This seemed complete codswallop as had she been able to shop herself, they wouldn't have stopped her putting all the tins on the shelf into her trolley, would they? Guest guest
Sue, I use Tesco on a weekly basis and they are excellent. OK there have been a couple of mistakes but they always put it right, sometimes sending the driver back the same day. I booked a delivery for yesterday (bank holiday) between 1 and 3, went out and made sure I was back by 1pm. The poor Tesco man was there and had been for an hour! It was his last delivery so he couldn't go off and do anything else. At least all the stuff stayed chilled/frozen in the back of the van. I'd highly recommend them, but am aware they are different in all areas. My mum uses Sainsburys and finds them very good. They forgot to charge her once, so she phoned them up as she didn't want to suddenly have this bill come in a lot later, so they said as she'd been so honest in phoning them, she could have the lot for free (and it was over ?100)! I don't think they make mistakes like that anymore. One thing we both find though is that our bills are much lower as there's none of this impulse buying. I think Iceland are also online as well now. Hannah Online Grocery Shopping Does anyone use this and, if so, which is the best? I've used both Sainsburys and Tesco in the past but all my experience is over a year out of date now so I'd be interested to hear what people think of the current services. Seems like all the other local stores too e.g. Co-op and Asda are also offering online services. --

I made the mistake of wanting exactly and only what I wanted, and as a result, had large gaps in my order. Well, to be honest, if I want kosher baked beans for example, it's no good at all if they send me non kosher ones as an alternative. I suppose loo paper and paper towels can easily be substitued for others. Ruthie
Guest guest
I use Tesco every two weeks and think it's great, there have been some rather odd substutions, but usually it's fine. The delivery always turns up on time and the drivers are really helpful. It's good for all that bulky stuff, I go every other week myself and just get fresh veg etc. and the alternate week have it delivered with bulky stuff - and I must say the weeks I have stuff delivered it's far cheaper and I get more stuff, which is quite spooky! The deliveries have always been early though and I found that annoying but would have seemed petulant to send them away O I've sent them away and one women was really ratty about it - I would like to point out though that each time I've had good reason ie. once was bathing DS when he was about 3 months, door bell rang, had to drag him out of the bath to answer door, there stands Tesco delivery women giving me bags without even looking up! - I pointed out that the delivery wasn't for another hour, and that I had to finish bathing my son, feed him and put him to bed and then shopping could be delivered. She then told me that I was her last delivery and she could wait while I dressed DS (gee thanks!) and if I didn't accept it now I couldn't have it at all!! - to which I pointed out that I was paying for a service and for my shopping to be delivered between 7-9pm not at 6pm and if she had a problem with that we could phone the store manager. She then humped off back to her van and said she would wait, I finished bathing, feeding etc. DS put him to bed and then went out at 7.10pm ;-)) to collect my shopping from one very unhappy lady. O and I also complained to Tesco's about her behaviour and got a £15.00 voucher - woo hoo! Guest guest
I have used both Tesco's and Asda's I prefer ASda's but they don't give you a substitue which means that you have to go out and buy it anyway so I have gibven up on online shopping for now! Guest guest
I think the moral of this is that if you are super-particular about what you want, then don't order those items online. But if you are willing to trade-off detail for incredible convenience then go for it. I used Tesco Direct when we lived in the UK and I thought it was absolute bliss. Anything beats dragging four children around a supermarket, especially when one of them is a newborn. I do recall substitutions but none of them ever bothered me. And sometimes I ordered the wrong quantity being unaware of how many kilos I needed of various fruits and veg. I have very fond memories of having bottles of wine delivered. Oh dear, I hope I'm not getting homesick again! J -----Original Message----- From: Vaudin [sMTP:jennifer@...] In some households Ruthie, getting the wrong loo paper and paper towels would indeed be regarded in the same light as non kosher beans in yours :-)))) It is something that puts me off online grocery shopping, even though I do a lot of other shopping online - Amazon, Kids Stuff, Lush, holidays etc - like you, I want what I want and do without otherwise. Guest guest
That 5 quid is the best money I spend each week. For a start I save the petrol and the time going round the shop, but also it would drive me round the bend dragging the kids with me as well (3 boys aged 4, 2 and 5 months). I do like shopping, even food shopping sometimes, but *not* with the children. I definitely spend less by sticking to what I need and if I think the bill is getting a bit high, I just go through my basket and chuck things out. I manage to spend less each week with three children than my sister does and she just has one 2 year old, so it is money well spent. I did stop for a while because I thought of how much shopping that 5 pounds would buy, but my bills went up. Hannah Re: Re: Online Grocery Shopping > Jenni wrote: > and resent paying 5.00 delivery charges ... but > > not long to go now >>>>>>>> I don't resent the £5 as when I order online I save money because I don't see things that aren't on my list and buy them! http://www.foxstitch.co.uk/

I suppose that's the real bottom line. I haven't *had* to drag my kids shopping for years. And even if Zehava wanted to come with me it wasn't difficult to get up earlier than a teenager to avoid having to take her! (nasty aint I!) I do agree that the putting on checkout/packing up/unpacking and putting away is a rea PITA and if you have it delivered you only have the last stage. In Israel since most people don't drive, all supermarkets have a home delivery service but you have to shop there first and they are a REAL pain. Checkout queues are miles long and seem to be peopled by hand-picked slowcoaches or argumentative hot tempered Mediterranean types shouting and waving hands. And then there are the security scares which prevent you getting to your car, as I wrote in a previous post. It makes dragging myself round a nice cool civilised Tesco, and doing my own packing up, seem like heaven! Ruthie
