Guest guest
In Frontpage, go to >View >Reports> Site Summary, and this will give you the size of all your files, hence the webspace requirement. You'll have to multiply by something to estimate your future requirements, of course. Joyce Techy help I want to move my website from one host to another as my current host's server seems to have been down more times than ... (maybe I better leave the rest of that sentence to the imagination) What I need to know is how to work out how much web space I need (I have unlimited space at the moment) and how much I am likely to need in the future as my website seems to be growing like Topsy at the moment. Any bright ideas as to how I do this? Without knowing how big it is I can't work out what represents a good deal... http://www.foxstitch.co.uk/

If not in one folder you'll have to add up all the individual properties of all the files. Anyway, most webhosters give essentially unlimited web space these days. Unless your website contains huge amounts of pictures, videos or sounds, it isn't going to take up that much space. Ruthie
Guest guest
Thanks Joyce! Have just checked website is currently 73,000KB of which 72,000KB is pictures - and it will only get bigger - off to investigate alternative hosts now.... http://www.foxstitch.co.uk/ " J.M. Guest guest
That's huge! Maybe you can experiment with saving the pictures at a lower resolution. Medium JPEGs, at 600 x 400 pixels are usually considered adequate for the internet, and are preferable as they are quicker for your readers to download. I always get mixed up with kb. is 73,000 kb 7 mb? 0r 73 mb? But yes, jpegs should be *maximum* 100k, preferably 50k. Ruthie
Guest guest
It's 73 megabytes. I think that's big - I have a site that I think is fairly big and that is less than 1.5Mb, but it only has a few pictures on it. The rest is plain text. Vicki, you can cut down the amount of space by 90% by compressing files into jpegs.. I am going to have a look at your site now.. Guest guest
[stuff about the size of foxstitch] I have taken a sample image (already a jpeg) and compressed it some more as an example of what it would look like at various sizes (of the file) Have a look at http://www.shite100.homestead.com/files/foxstitch/fox.html (if you are interested

So how on earth has built up 73 mb of stuff???? and how did you get onto the website? I couldn't. Ruthie

Guest guest
james...how DID you get onto it? And maybe there's a directory of just pictures we could look at, as that will give the size of each one. For example on my website I have a dir and a sub dir of pictures at http://www.ruthiepearlman.com/pictures/rafpics I do have some rather large jpgs there which must have slipped through my compression net, but on the whole not many are more than 100k. Rafpics is just over 4 mb in total. Ruthie

I have a vague feeling that I might have tried it in the past and had problems but I am not certain of this (I occaisionally look at the sites in peoples sigs) The images all seem to be in http://fp.foxwood.plus.com/images/ which luckily doesn't have directory brwsing disabled and apart from at least two >1Mb bitmaps there are just **lots** of images. They could be compressed quite a bit more. Something like Paintshop pro could do this as a batch job. Anyway, perhaps this is getting a bit OT (if such a thing is possible on this list...) and a little bit in depth? Maybe it should go off-list or even wait to see if even wants any assistance james
Guest guest
Thanks for all your advice. I spoke to the help desk today and apparently they have updated all their DNS servers and until other ISPs refresh there servers people may have problems viewing the site... ho hum ... its all Double Dutch to me! Virtually all the images are jpegs already - and I am somewhat constrained by the fact that the images need to be high quality so people can see what they are buying! Most of the images are taken from the designers' own websites (with permission of course) as this is the easiest way for me to get nice pictures of the products. Not really sure what I am doing here - as you can probably tell!! Not sure what to do next - how do I compress the jpegs? And would I have to compress just the images or all the thumbnails associated with them? I dread to think how many images I have on the darned website... argh.... http://www.foxstitch.co.uk/ ruthie@... wrote: > > > That's huge! Are you hosting with BT internet? My partners firm has been getting this reason from them for about 6 months now... (and from Demon too until recently). Most pay-for ISP's do this sort of refresh every 48 hours. I don't know about most, but my mole at FS tell me that they do them at this frequency too and that its an automatic thing. Not great to hear I know - but hope everything is back to normal soon for you -- Helen Armfield helen@...

Guest guest
Your table fits onto my monitor width ways but I have to scroll lengthways. Maybe your monitor is set up to show too little on a screen. Ruthie > > Well, this is slightly disingenuous, but only slightly - it's late and I'm > > too tired to figure it out! Guest guest
....I've just uploaded some holiday photos to > http://www.uptails.freeserve.co.uk/holiday1.html and I can't work out why > the table doesn't fit on my screen... The code is fine. The table is set to size up to 95% of the window width (or screen width if the browser widow is maximised). However, whilst the cells can size up to whatever width you like (as the window gets bigger), they can only squash down to the picture width (plus the inter-cell spacing/padding) So whether the table will all display depends on your screen resolution. It displays fine at 1024x768 and looks like it would work at 800x600 which ought the cover a large majority of people. You could try reducing the number of columns but people will have the scroll down further hth james dad to eva grace 7.5 days

Guest guest
Thanks, and everyone else. I ended up shrinking the thumbnails just a tad, and will have a look at the resolution on my new monitor! I think Eva's names are lovely, too!
