It's almost one and I should be long asleep, but I am not because my

darned hip hurts too much. Yes, I took something for it but it is

not enough. I'm sorta hungry, but not, cause what I really want is

junk and we don't have any, and I should go to bed but the hip would

keep me awake. Ergh.

Ah, and we have a four day weekend coming up. The kids are off

Monday and Tuesday as part of the budget cuts. Lovely. Blech.

Um, I get the feeling I've been living a sheltered life ... they are

cancelling school for the purpose of budget cuts? Since when? Is this

normal?

(The other day I pulled into an elementary school near my ST, just out of

curiosity. The building was so sad and run down looking it looked like an

industrial warehouse. The playground was pitiful and the grounds dotted

with trailers, which I imagine are improptu classrooms ... teaching in

trailers, sounds barbaric to me. How did things get this bad?)

Don't get me starte . Don't get me started.

I am so disgusted with what I see in reguards to some areas and education it

is one of the main reasons that I chose to homeschool.

In the state of Ohio the schools are exempt from building code standards

(unless this law was changed in the last five years since we moved from

there). There are kids going to school in the state of Ohio that have no

bathrooms in the schools and the kids have to walk to the gas station next

door. They don't have cafaterias. Some of the buildings don't pass fire

saftey standards, others should be condemned. In the city that we were

living in, they were more interested in replacing the football scoreboard

every year or two than spending money on text books. My friends daughter

was using a history book that was more than 10 years out of date and their

math books were from the 70s. Not that math has changed that much but can

you imagine the condition of those books?? This same girl stayed up until

almost 1am once working on her science notebook and she ended up with a D on

it. Her mom called the teacher at the school (I was standing right there)

and the teacher told her that she didn't have time to talk to her because

the phone call was making her late for a class and that she had just better

get used to the idea that her daughter was lazy and would never amount to

anything.

Around here we are told that there is no money for special ed. They are

building a lot of new schools because of overcrowding and the use of

trailers but there is no money for special ed. The county that we moved in

before we moved here tried to tell me that the schools there were the best

in the state, that they had this awsome special ed program that would be

wonderful for my kids, blah blah blah, and yet there is a Yahoo group just

for that county and everything that is wrong with sped there that gets

something like 600 messages a day.

Public education has become really sad in a lot of areas.

Oregon has had some severe budget problems the last couple of years,

and this last year being the most severe to date. It is a long

complicated story of how Oregon's school funding came to be managed

in the way that it is, but the short of it is that we do not have

stable funding for the schools and are dependant upon the welfare of

the state. This means in times of plenty the schools do well and in

times of poverty they suffer severely. Oregon has lost a tremendous

amount of it's industrial and corporate base and there is nothing to

take it's place so there is less revenue. Each school district is

paid by the state on a per student basis which is supposed to cover

the cost of thier education, the facilities, etc. The state does not

have enough money and so funding is being reduced and school must

find ways absorb that reduction. Around the state school districts

have been suffering through cut after cut and there is nothing left

more to cut basically. Our district only cut an additional five days

off the school year which still kept us within federal minimums for

school year days. Other districts, like Portland, cut almost SIX

WEEKS of school days in order to absorb thier cuts.

Now that I've expounded on this my chances of having a list mate come

here are probably slim to none.

I was born in Alaska.

It's better than here.

Anything is better than this area.

I hate all the people in this area...then again, I grew up in the country

where your nearest neighbor was a cow.

Ok. I feel your pain.

I understand now. Remember, I am not getting all my email right now and I

am behind and I don't have my computer.

I don't drink coffee.....

But beyond that...

You do know that I have people calling me at all weird hours don't you?

LOL!

I stayed in Columbia, MD, last summer for a week with a friend. I felt

like a fish out of water. I was glad to come home.

> that stinks. How is your hip?

Well staying off the foot has not been too much of a problem as the

hip is too damn sore to be up much. I stand up it feels like a hot

knife. I called and got an appointment for May 7th. All in all for

my doc at the ortho clinic that's not too far out. Blech. I really

hope I can convince him to shoot it with steroids for me. I know the

cost. It's less pain and more function now, and eventually an

earlier hip replacement, but I can't hardly do anything right now

with it. Damn nusicance.
