Guest guest
Barbara, I am going to respond to the issue of the puffing sound that being "on demand" creates. When I am in church and it is very quiet such as during the prayers, I will take the hose out of my nose until the prayer is over. I have used my POC in church & S.S. and it even has a motor type sound to me ( as you may remember when we were in Orlando together). Yes, I have puffing and a motor running. LOL Toodles! Guest guest
Barbara, These are not silly questions. I use my oxygen in movie theaters all the time. As you know I use tanks and a conserver. With a conserver there is a small puff but it's quiet and so far at least no one has even given me a glance because of noise. I make toast with my toaster and I do use a blow dryer. I'm sure there are folks who don't and would never but I'm careful and so far at least I haven't had a problem. The stuff about petroleum jelly and stuff like that is a bit of a puzzle to me. The idea that my oxygen is somehow going to cause a jar of vaseline to burst into flames striks me as a bit ridiculous. The one thing I will say is that petroleum jelly products will cause our tubing to deteriorate faster so if you use bacitracin or something like that inside your nose, just be aware you will go through tubing faster than you normally would. And finally yes, what you've been told about your concentrator is what I've been told. Give it space so that air can circulate and wash the filters frequently. Guest guest
Barb, I have used a pulse regulator everywhere and no one has even looked at it. I also use a minimal amount of hair spray. Use toaster and try to resist putting the tubing in there..(lol kidding)Yep your concentrator does need space around it. I possible out it in another room and open a window a little becauseof the heat they create. And they can be quite loud. I have mine outside on the porch with a tube coming through the wall..It only comes in when the temp gets below 60. Vaseline is what I use for my nose. I use to only use Ayr or Ocean gelbut decided I am not going to stick a match up my nose so I use it at night. I do have to change cannulas more frequentlybecause the nose prongs get a bit stiff. I trim them then have to change them out. Guest guest
Barbara.... no silly questions! My portable has 'clicks' everytime I breathe in. No puffs. Absolutely silent unless you put your ear right down on the pack to listen. Ask your O2 provider for the....oh damn, I forget the name...the little gizzy that goes on top of the cylinder... there is one w/no puffs. I don't use hair dryer...I'M "au natural" you know. I use toaster. I think sprays 'coat' tubing and some of the contents can deteriorate tubing. That's what I heard... I was told concentrator works better w/ window open a bit. Gives it more "draw" and therefore works better and more efficiently. Vaseline, etc....can deteriorate tubing. I'm speaking of nasal tubing; cannulas... Oils/lotions...how does that get on your tubing?? From your face I suppose....I use face products during the day, clean my face at night and ensure a good "seal" with my cpap. This is a good tip for cpap users...if you have a hard time with sealing around the face mask, be sure skin is clean when you go to bed. Hope this helps from my part of the world...ever beautiful Oregon! MamaSher; 70, IPF 3-06, OR. NasturtiumsDon't fret about tomorrow, God is already there! Theater and movies and hair dryers, oh my! Guest guest
Hi Barabara, I take my o2 everywhere but don't need it after I've been sitting for a few minutes. I've never had anyone say something about it unless they had questions. I don't think anyone will say anything negative to you because they have to know it would make them look like a gigantic jack ass. If someone does get negative tell them to get their healthy, cranky butt up and move away from you. So far I've done ok just using saline for my nose. However, I will say that 13 years ago when I was in the hospital, pregnant with pnuemonia the nurses put Vaseline up my nose even though today they wouldn't think of it. Personally I don't use a hair dryer much at all. If you ever watch down the barrel of a hair dryer you will notice a spark ever so often. I never wear my o2 if I decide to " style " my hair because of that spark. I keep my hair permed now because drying my hair everyday was wearing me out.It makes getting put together everyday alot easier for me. better breathing to ya, 33 FL IPF dx 1/06 > > Good morning all! > > OK - now for my next silly questions. Guest guest
I forgot to add I also have a concentrator that is nearly quiet. It's a VisionAire. No filters to clean. Ever. Everything is inside. I could sleep with this concentrator in the bedroom where as before I always kept it in a second bedroom. I'm a light sleeper... MamaSher; 70, IPF 3-06, OR. Guest guest
Barb there are NO silly questions i have used the portable in the theater, sometimes the movie or show makes enough noise that you need to check to see if the unit is working, because you might not be able to hear it besides your health is the priority never thought about the hair dryer or toaster, i just do it yes the concentrator needs lots of air it throws out lots of heat, when in a small room in the summer, the room really heats up happened to us last week while visiting my daughter, our bedroom got so hot that we had to open the door the next time we go, we will put "connie" the concentrator in the hallway the noise doesn't bother the kids since my daughters buy those white noise machines for the kids when they sleep rarely use aerosols and hair spray -- but the smells bother me jerry has to keep the bathroom door closed when he uses right guard spray the candle departments in the stores bother me too i used to love the scent of right guard -- not anymore stopped using all of my perfumes, etc some people spray there lower limbs, so it bothers them less there is discussion about petroleum based products my pulmonary said not to worry about when my nose gets sore from the o2 she said that i won't "blow up" the petroleum based products might affect the tubing/canulas -- so just change them more often i do use the pump sprays on cleaning products, for some reason the odors don't bother meif the odors do bother you, maybe a mask will help i'm sure you will get lots of responses we should put all of these responses into a book Pink Joyce R (IPF 3/06) IFA 5/09 Pennsylvania Donate Life Listed 1/09 Inactive 4/09 www.transplantfund.org--- Subject: Theater and movies and hair dryers, oh my!To: Breathe-Support Date: Thursday, July 9, 2009, 10:02 AM Good morning all!OK - now for my next silly questions. Guest guest
well ironically I did respiratory therapy for 25+years but when transfered to a veterans hospital is where I worked as a home oxygen coordinator but am now retired due to ILD/pulmonary fibrosis due to maybe RA. We were required to make sure we made our patients aware not to use electrical items near oxygen due to sparks and not to use oil based creams or lotions in nares... sores devolope and not to put oil or grease on oxygen regulator. and with as loud as a movie is the puff from a conserving device is barely heard The problem with Vaseline and other petroleum products is that combustion could cause a severe burn in the environment of oxygen. Use non-petroleum lubricants such as water based. last but not least your oxygen concentrator need air surrounding the machine to use... air passes thru the sieve beds and leave oxygen to come out for patient use after nitrogen and other gases are removed you should have about 97% oxygen on 2lpm and it lowers on higher liters > > Good morning all! > > OK - now for my next silly questions.
