Here's my story.....On March 23, 2004 I was involved in an head-on collision with a jackknifed semi truck which was sitting in the middle of the road. I don't have a lot of memory from that point on but did wake up in ICU about two days later. While I was in the ICU the doctors found that I was bleeding from the rectum so they did a colonoscopy and confirmed that I had colon cancer. I was in such bad shape that they couldn't do anything about it at that time. In June 2004 I went in for the colon resection and followed up with six months of chemotherapy - 4 weeks on with 2 weeks off with FU5 and leucovorian (sp?). That ended in February 2005. I went back for my check-up in late May and they found that the cancer had spread to my liver. I went for surgery in July to have a liver resection and the surgeon said he was sure he got it all and there was no cancer found in the margins. He also did a sonogram on the remaining part of the liver and found no cancer. My oncologist didn't feel that I needed to follow up with chemo so that's where I'm at right now. I will go back in December for a CT scan and am hoping for the best but am cautiously optimistic. I am having a hard time living with the fear of the cancer recurring and would like to know how all of you deal with it. Many thanks and hope to become a regular on this list. Sue Sue: I am shocked that you did not have chemo after the liver surgery. I have never heard of not following up when it reappears. Have you had a second opinion on that one? Guest guest
Hi Sue, I go for my next bloodwork for CEA counts this coming Thursday. I am quite nervous about it. But am told that this is normal. This morning when I took out the trash for the trash day I met the lady who lives down a block walking her Basset Hound. She is a ten year Ovarion (sp?) cancer survivor. She told me how she just had a colonoscopy since she was having hard stools. Said her grandmother died from colon cancer so she had convinced herself that she now has colon cancer. She was clean thank God!!!! The point I am trying to bring across is even after ten years this lady still has fears of it coming back. We talked of this for a while. She said the fears are the most difficult the first five years. But the fears are always there. This is something that we as cancer survivors have to live with. How we deal with it is beyond me at times. Pray to God. Put your trust in God. You have gone through so much from the accident to the cancer surgery. You are a suvivor!!!!!! God has plans for you and is not done with you. I feel that!!!!! Love, Ingrid > > > > > > Hi List, > > > > > > I have been battling colon cancer since March of 2004. I don't have any advice i am afraid but just want you to know that you will both be in my thoughts and prayers. Guest guest
Lynne, About the infection, no I don't believe she did. Right now she has something going on but no one seems too concerned. They put a stent in her left kidney because it was blocked by the tumor and she had a kidney infection, well she has protein in her urine and most of the time her urine is very bloody. She is on avastin, which the drug warnings say if you experience these symptoms you should be off of it. Well, the dr thinks its just from the stent and its normal, which I of course think is crap but my mom is going with his opinion..lol. I hope your mom does great and it helps her. I had thought my mom would go for the surgery too but she changed her mind.
