I've been reading these posts (and Andy's book) for a while. I now am starting

to feel comfortable. I just got a perscription from my DAN for DMSA. My 4 year

old son weights 35 lbs. His hair test showed that he was mercury toxic (high in

a lot of metals including copper).

I wanted to start really conservative so I was going every 3 hours with 4mg of

DMSA. Does this sound ok? I have him on brain child minerals and vitamins (along

with cod liver oil, pro EFA, probiotics, cell food).

I am going to journal where his skills are so I can be aware of any slow

regression and growth.

I refused the challenge test. My DAN was ok with this, but he stated that he

doesn't know how to gauge when to stop chelating without the challenge test.

How do I know when to start?

I was suprized my DAN gave me 100 mg pills. My tiny little kid was to supposed

to take that every 8 hours WOW!

Any advice before I start I'm kinda nervous. I was going to chelate every other

weekend.

-----------That's good. Sorry I can't remember, but since you are chelating

your son, have you also joined the Autism-Mercury group? We are glad to help

you here, but they may have more pertinent advice for a young

child.-------Jackie

I just got a perscription from my DAN for DMSA.

----------You do know you can get DMSA without a prescription, don't you? You

don't need your DAN for this. You can order 25mg capsules, so you won't have as

much dividing to do.-----------Jackie

My 4 year old son weights 35 lbs. His hair test showed that he was mercury

toxic (high in a lot of metals including copper).

----------Is the test from DDI? Have you posted it to the

group?--------Jackie

I wanted to start really conservative so I was going every 3 hours with 4mg of

DMSA. Does this sound ok?

----------Yes. The dosage range for children (and adults) is 1/8 to 1/2

mg/lb, so 4mg for a 35 lb child is a reasonable starting dose. Is there some

reason you are going to dose every 3 hours instead of every 4? More frequent is

always fine, but most people start out at 4 for DMSA, and then lower it if

necessary, or when they add in ALA, go to 3.-----------Jackie

I have him on brain child minerals and vitamins (along with cod liver oil, pro

EFA, probiotics, cell food).

----------Are you talking about a multi or some indivdual vitamins and

minerals? Check AI and the Autism-Mercury group for recommendations. Make sure

he's getting plenty of Vit C, Vit E, zinc, magnesium, etc.---------Jackie

I am going to journal where his skills are so I can be aware of any slow

regression and growth.

----------Good plan. I think I've heard that videoing children is also a good

idea to document progress.----------Jackie

I refused the challenge test.

----------Good for you. Remember you are in charge and it is your child, not

his. DAN's may suggest alot of things that Andy would consider harmful, such as

the dosage and timing suggested below, and the challenge test.---------Jackie

My DAN was ok with this, but he stated that he doesn't know how to gauge when

to stop chelating without the challenge test. How do I know when to start?

---------Do you mean when to stop? In general, Andy has said to chelate 6

months more after you start feeling better. Or another test is to stop, see if

symptoms return, or after a break, try some rounds again, and see if you get any

symptoms from chelation anymore. Andy has also said you are not done chelating

until you no longer need all the supplements and special diets. He said the

hair test will normalize before your done also, so you can't go by that either.

Honestly, I think that's a little scary that this DAN doctor thinks he needs a

challenge test to determine when you're done chelating. You and he should be

able to *see* if your son is improving, because that is the goal here, isn't it?

Who cares what the test says, what's important is the progress your son makes.

I'm sorry to sound so skeptical, but in general I haven't always heard good

things about DAN doctors, and as far as I understand it, all they have to do is

go to a conference to call themselves a DAN doctor. And I have seen one myself

once, he was very expensive, and suggested some harmful things, and really

didn't understand the whole picture, so I wasn't impressed. Needless to say,

I'm not wasting my money there anymore. I have learned so much more from these

groups *for free* that was actually *correct and useful* information, than

so-called experts that I have seen. (With the exception of , who

does get the whole picture and follows Andy's protocol.) Ok, off my soapbox :)

Jackie

I was suprized my DAN gave me 100 mg pills. My tiny little kid was to supposed

to take that every 8 hours WOW!

------------This is what I mean. *Way* too big of a dose not given on the

half life, and especially for a child! Andy has said to start at 1/8 to 1/2

mg/lb, and not to exceed 1 mg/lb maximum (this is in HTI). And of course, the

absolutely most important thing is to dose based on the half-life, so 4 hours or

less for DMSA, not 8 hours. And you shouldn't have to waste your money *trying*

to educate your doctor. Sorry, on my soapbox again :)

Anyway, realize that there are lots of people that do this without a doctor.

If you feel it is necessary for some things, then please at least stick to your

guns and use Andy's protocol for chelation.----------Jackie

Any advice before I start I'm kinda nervous. I was going to chelate every

other weekend.

------------I can certainly understand you being nervous, especially since it

involves your child. I think you have a very reasonable plan in place. Have

you read the Love Letters at Autism-Mercury and/or Moria's link? That might

give you some encouragement. Good luck with your son, and keep us

posted.--------Jackie

IMR>>>>Yes. Better to be conservative than give too much. If he does

okay, then you can always up it a few rounds down the road.

IMR>>>>>Of DMSA??

That is TOO much.

We are happy to help you here too, but autism-

mercury follows the Cutler a lot too, and might be a

place you would want to check out, if you have not already.
