Guest guest
Hi everyone!! Glenn is getting weaker, even though he is eating fairly well. About 3:30 a.m. this morning, he was attempting to go to the bathroom (diarrhea, of course) and fell forward as he was sitting down. I struggled with him for almost 1/2 hour (he's 6'4 " tall) and then went in and awakened my girlfriend, who is here for the week to visit and stay with Glenn on the days that I work. (I took off today, b/c I've been up since 3:30 a.m. and didn't think I'd function too well at work, plus was too afraid to leave Glenn) I won't even go in to the mess I had to clean up in addition to Glenn. The two of us could not even budge Glenn towards getting him up; he was just dead weight; sort of disoriented and just too weak to even help us get him up. We finally got a doubled sheet underneath him and dragged him into the bedroom on the carpet and put pillows under his head and covered him with blankets. Then I called 911 and they came and 4 young hefty men picked him up, using our " sheet stretcher " and put him on the bed. This disease called CANCER leaves one with NO DIGNITY!!! It is just sooooo horrifyingly sad and scary!! He is complaining of his hip hurting, but it's not broken, as he has walked with our help this morning to the bathroom, etc. I think he'll probably notice more aches and pains from bruising, as the day goes on. I've spoken to our Hospice Nurse and she is ordering a walker, which he refused before, but I think now he'll use it!! He better or I will hire a nurse and he will pay for it!!! LOL Sound tough, don't I?? Lots of hugs and prayers, Donelle Caregiver to Glenn
Guest guest
Donelle, I have a lot of pain meds in me from different things and sometimes they seem to gang up and all cut in at once. There is no pain for that time but there is now feeling or coordination either. I would say Glenn is getting too many pain meds and you might just start droping some of them. It is sometimes good to hurt a little bit to keep life back in your life. It's nice to know you can shut it off with those little green pills if you need to. Take care. Guest guest
I am sorry you have had such a session last night Donelle. You are right that it is impossible to hang onto the dignity in some circumstances. Speaking as an ex-nurse I can visualise the scenes only too well. I hope that Glenn will feel able to use the walking frame as it must be a huge worry to you otherwise. Is it insulting of me to suggest a commode? I think I can hear Glenn's response from here........ Hope things are better tonight and that his strength picks up, that diarrhoea must be so debilitating. Guest guest
Donelle, Thanks for the update on Glenn. I know how difficult this must be for you. My dad had the same problem and he didn't have cancer, just dementia and diabetes. It turned out he had some serious heart problems too, but nobody's sure when that all started. My mom had to call fire rescue several times to get him up off the floor. He was weak and he'd just miss the chair completely, or not get far enough and hit the arm and fall on the floor. It was pretty bad there toward the end. Twice he fell and hit his head, split it open on the stationary bike and had to have stitches in almost exactly the same place on his forehead. I know the hospital was beginning to think my mom must be abusing him. Then the ceiling fell in on top of him (literally) and when they found the plaster and stuff in his shirt pocket, they believed her about what happened...lol. That's an interesting story. I also know what it's like to try to get the dead weight up off the floor. He was also 6'4 " and even though he'd lost a lot of weight, my mom and I still couldn't do it a couple times. I'm so sorry all this is going on with you too. I can only keep you both in my prayers and let you know I'm thinking of you a lot. Wish I could be there to help you, but I'm there in spirit, if not in body. Grandmommyandme@... wrote: Hi everyone!! Glenn is getting weaker, even though he is eating fairly well. Guest guest
Oh my goodness. Donelle, is good your girlfriend was there to at least help you get him to bedroom. Well you might want someone to still check out his hip, it could be cracked. Richie fell in one of his woozy moments - not sure where he fell anymore, outside or in the house. But later they said he broke his hip. But that is same side where cancer was gnawing on his leg bone anyway, so it was hard for him to walk as it was. As hard as it was for him to walk, I would get up at night, and bed would be empty - and I would catch him walking around doing something. One day - I think I went to store an came home, he complained of not feeling well, well I found that he had stuck 4 or 5 nitro patches on his chest and back. Scared the crap out of me.. Think I call ambulance but maybe not just had help me get him to car so I took him to emergency. I hated to take him to emergency for his cancer because they would inevitably send him to San since that is where is ONC was. My Onc nurse Mildred said ifyou go to emergency make sure you call me because they will send you to San cause they don't know anything. I thought it so strange that ER people have no idea what goes on in the rest of the hospital?????? Jolene Last night's trauma... Hi everyone!! When we finally got the sheet under him and slid him to the carpeted bedroom and gave him a pillow and blanket, I felt much better!! Len cc4 I don't think so, Len....all he has is the 25 mcg. pain patch. He's not taking any other pain meds. Do you think the pain patch would cause the fall?? I would put him to bed before I'd take the pain patch away, tho. This man has suffered daily day and night with the infiltration of the chemo into the chest area pain, then the Ascites pain for months, then the esophogeal bleeding pain, and on and on for the last 14 months. Now the only " pain " he has is when he is having tummy cramps prior to diarrhea. His b/p is way low....mid 70's over 45-52...and he's lightheaded sometimes. He's just so very weak... at times he can barely talk. I'm sure it won't be long before he needs someone here all the time. Guest guest
Donelle, What a way to wake up, for both of you. It sounds like Glenn is lucky to have not broken anything. He is also lucky for having you. As you are telling all of us the process you both are going through right now, it lets us know how much you love Glenn. If I was faced with the same situation (and I might be soon) I would only pray that I could be a strong as you are. I pray for you and Glenn everyday and hope you find some days of happiness. Guest guest
Donelle, I sure hope you don't get the snow we got. I think it is about eight inches. I went to barn to check on horses. Snow is half way up to my knee. Husband is at work about an hour away. I have talked to him and trying to get him to stay there for the night. He is supposed to be home about 1 a.m. normal driving conditions. Too many open corn fields and its drifting over the highways. Guest guest
Oh goodness Ingrid am sure you will not rest until your hubby gets home. Was so glad that son stayed at the truck stop last night. He always comes home the back way and that road is so curvy and hilly. and little part is near the dam.. Have visions of him going off the road and into the water. Took him nearly hour to get home this morning. He is off until tomorrow. Though someone called him earlier and probably wanted him to work for them. Are a couple people that forever calling him to work. They just can't get decent help to work there. Take care and hope your hubby gets home okay. Jolene Re: Last night's trauma... Donelle, I sure hope you don't get the snow we got. I think it is about eight inches. My mother could not get up by herself either and was too heavy for me or even for me and Dad. We had to call my brother or my nephew to come when she needed to get up. Of course, she was not a burden, and I would gladly have cleaned up messes or anything else to have kept her. I keep you in my prayers. Sharon Dear Sharon... I certainly understand that...and agree totally...thanks for your prayers. Lots of hugs and prayers, Donelle Caregiver to Glenn
