Jan, I know your glad that is all over for a little while. Hope the rest of the process goes as quickly. Love and Prayers, Peggy IPF 2004, FloridaWorry looks around, Sorry looks back, Faith looks up. I have just completed (I think) testing for transplant eligibility...it was very interesting and intense! Due to my insurance we have to go to Dallas for anything related to Transplant. We are patients of the Heart and Lung Transplant department at UT Southwest. I can't say enough about every single employee at the hospital and every specialist's office that we have had to visit. They are all very concerned about your comfort, that you do not have to wait for your appointment and that you always have someone right there to help you find whatever you may need ! Even the doctors take their time and visit with you until all your questions are answered. We are very impressed. They are one of the Centers of Excellence, and we can sure see how they got there! Hopefully, my case will be presented to the Committee on Friday of this week...if not then the next week. It has been fun...interesting and the source of greater fatigue, just keeping up with the schedule...lol... I hope you all have a great Wednesday today!

Jan,

Congrats - you must be glad this portion is complete. How long is the process? This is going to be my next step after I see the doctor on 8/20.

I didn't realize your insurance would choose the facility that you have to go to. Is that because there is not a transplant hospital near you?

I will keep you in my prayers for approval by the Committee.

The insurances choose for different reasons. Sometimes its because of

their hospital contracts and, when so, thats troublesome as you may not

be able to choose the best or closest. In Jan's case, if I remember

correctly, its a choice based on quality. Methodist Hospital in Houston

had a period during which they considered them not to meet the standard.

I do believe though that they have recovered or are on the way to

recovery.

Jan

Is there a chance down the road, you'll switch to Houston? I see they

are doing far more transplants than UTSW and while their success rate is

lower they are transplanting a much higher percentage of those waiting.

Joyce,

Thanks for the info - Since I was told about possibly being a transplant candidate I have been trying to educate myself. Did you know I found that Dr. who performed the first single and double lung transplants is at the Univ. of Penn hospital? That should be great for their program.

We are going to be kind of in your neck of the woods this weekend. I am going to a wedding in Phil., PA this weekend at Hyatt at Penns Landing - My daughter is driving from Boston with her family and taking our 2 3/4 grand daughter and 8 month old to Sesame Place on Friday. Then we are going to stay with friends at their home near Lake Wallenpaupack for a couple of days.

It is so good getting to know all the people on this forum,

Joanie .... I'm the one who uses the cpap in our house and I'm here to tell you, that "snorkel" (as I call mine) can play havoc with a marriage! HAHAHAA.

I caught a glimpse of myself in the bathroom mirror one night and stood there and laughed right outloud!

My hair was sticking out on each side above the straps and looked rather like ears. The strap going across the top of my head flattened my hair totally and added to the look of "ears"...

What with the snorkel hanging down I looked like nothing that my husband should be sleeping with!

I usually remove the entire mask when I get up at night but sometimes I remove only the hose, as I did that particular night. For better or for worse, right?

I posted a few days back about my concentrator....it's a VisionAire...

almost silent. I can easily tolerate this in our bedroom and I'm a light sleeper. Not even a filter to clean...all inside.

Have fun in Chattanooga!

Peggy,

The reason I use caps is for the practical purpose of not needing my glasses when I work on the computer. It is just so much clearer to my eyes, anyway...I've had complaints in the past with remarks such as all caps represent anger...well, exscuuuse me! It has simply been personal preference but I am going to try not to do all caps anymore, but may slip up since habits are hard to break. I am not all that techy so I am probably ignorant to protocol, but I am willing to learn and change. Also the keyboard on my laptop is not as comfortable as my desktop keyboard so all caps prevented a lot of errors in spelling and capitalization...

I'm assuming you're going to UTSW? Who will you be seeing? Good luck in

your trip there. We've had several who have been there. Jan was there

most recently. Gwynne was there and still goes for follow up post

transplant (even though she had the transplant in San ). I was at

UTSW yesterday although not for transplant evaluation.

My doc is Blewett. I really like him. My family attended a mandatory seminar a couple of weeks ago. It was very informative and we all felt a lot better after going. My evalauation was scdeduled in mid-Aug but moved up to this Wed at my request. Iin past 2 days have gone from 5 to 10 liters and Os level drops a lot on 20 yd walk or coughing episode.

Hope i am not repeating myself. UTSW will admit me to St 's hospital for evaluation this Wed. This will be easier on me and my family because i have trouble getting around and this way the hospital can move me place to place. Have been in study at UTSW so my doc in study and my doc at home have all been in touch with Dr Blewett at UTSW and this has been very helpful. If I get on list we will be moving to Dallas

RonnieWhen was your last echocardiogram and what was your pulmonary pressureon it? Now I ask still knowing that the accuracy of echocardiograms inmeasuring is limited. However, they are an excellent means ofestablishing a need for further study. I think that's generally very true...anything above 5 liters they say is more effective delivered by a mask. Also 10 liters through a cannula is really hard on the nose.

Spoke with doc and told me at 6 to 10 liters nasal canula does not effectively deliever O2. So this afternoon nose piece will come and we will see if that is more effective. I'll let you know.

Dyane,

If it was not for a doctor that was on call that explaied so well about mask vs canulla i would not know either. It makes a difference because today I have kept SpO2 in the 90's with no problems. I was also told to use shotest tube to deliver highest amount of O2. I refer to plastic tubing as my leash. The longer the tubing the less accurate of how many liters you are actually getting.

Ronnie,I've been wondering about that since I use 6-9 at home and I read abouthigh liter stuff and yet no one, Not even my o2 supplier had mentioned amask. It really makes me mad that I have to do their job for them!Dyane Phoenix IPF 02> > > > >>>>>>>>> > > > >>>>>>>> Jan,> > > > >>>>>>>> Congrats - you must be glad this portion is complete. How> > > long is the> > > > >>>>>>>> process? Ronnie,

You're correct in that you do lose some flow with increased lengths of tubing. Many of us have a "liter meter" that tells us the flow that is coming through.

I currently have 100 feet of tubing connecting me to my concentrator and I have to turn it up about half a liter to get the flow I would have with 50 feet of tubing.

Liter meters can be purchased for something in the $20 to $25 range. Here is one source:
