We do this too - and similarly they are rarely removed. At least Steffi has her own pull-a-long suitcase/backpack so I never weigh myself down (she even gets to carry her own change of clothes and water bottle!). Interesting to hear about the new procedures. I've been lurking on rec.travel.air for a few weeks now and as you can imagine the group's traffic has gone wild the past couple of days. There is a lot of discussion about carry-on luggage today (and the US custom of allowing anyone to go to the gate, not just departing passengers). Most people were adamant they wouldn't allow their $3000 laptop with confidential company data be checked in (and given some of their stories over the weeks about missing/damaged luggage, I'm not surprised). They are also speculating that the knives used by the hijackers were made of ceramic or fibreglass to avoid detection by the security barriers, although you'd hope that a good patting-down would find these. -- Sue

But they only pat you down if you bleep the machine - which wouldn't happen with ceramic - also they might not show up on an x ray.
