When I was pg with DS2 ( 7 years ago) and DS1 was 2, I employed as a mother's help. She was in her late 40's and had a teenage (over 16) daughter. She answered an ad I'd put in the local shop. When she started, she did a bit of cleaning, and helped out with DS1 just before DS2 was born and when he was a small baby. As DS2 grew older she helped me with both of them, and then as I started my consultancy business, she would look after the kids while I worked from home in my office. Over the years, she became more involved in childcare than cleaning, but we became firm friends, we helped each other through crises, and she became a real friend. She came to love the kids, and they loved her. She also got to know all our friends kids, and she helped them out at times too. She gradually scaled down what she did for me DS2 started full time school - i.e. after 5 years, but, now that we are in Perth, she still does after school care for some close friends. She had no formal training, but was exactly what I needed - a friend, and somebody with a mature head on her shoulders. My current Nanny is great, but she is 21 and a student and a great laugh, but not the same as . I would recommend to anyone that they get " an " .
