Guest guest
Some of you will have heard about a new nasty virus that is doing the rounds called Nimda. This one appears to be able to spread without needing you to open an attachment so it is harder to protect yourself against it. If you can read the email you can be infected even if you haven't clicked on the email to open it. Please EVERYONE make sure that your virus checker software is up to date and enabled. If you haven't updated this week then go and get that update from your anti-virus software site NOW. Or at write a note to do it before you down load any more email or surf the web. If you are not sure how to do this or what it means I'm happy to help off list - just let me know which sort of Windows and Anti virus you are using and I'll do my best to write it out step by step for you. Quite a few people on the various lists have had loads of hassle trying to get rid of various virus/worm infections over the past few months - everyone of them will tell you that it was hassle they didn't need!!! Guest guest
You can also download a patch from the Microsoft.com site, which will protect you from Nimda. I found it through http://www.symantec.co.uk and clicking on the nimda link - in fact, I've updated IE to 5.01 package 2 (not quite what they call it, but it's the one that includes the patch! It took about 2 1/2 hours to download and instal the update, and to update Norton, but is well worth it. I had one of the less harmful viruses earlier this year, and it took 2 days to clean up my puter!! Guest guest
In article <004a01c14126$399f7a00$0600a8c0@fetlar>, Liz Goudie (NCT) writes >Some of you will have heard about a new nasty virus that is doing the rounds >called Nimda. >This one appears to be able to spread without needing you to open an >attachment so it is harder to protect yourself against it. If you can read >the email you can be infected even if you haven't clicked on the email to >open it. It would appear that it can also be caught from infected websites (by automatically downloading when you go to that site), so be careful when surfing too. Do make sure your virus checker software is up to date before surfing the web, and in the same way you would be suspicious of unexpected attachments on emails, be suspicious of anything attempting to download from websites unexpectedly. (I'm not sure whether you will get warning of this or not - I've looked at two anti-virus sites today and one seemed to imply it would happen automatically, while the other said you would be prompted to download.) Of course there's always the option of using some other mail reader than a microsoft product so that you aren't so vulnerable. ;-) -- Sue
