Guest guest
Most of us have the car we already had. However, I faced the decision shortly after I was diagnosed. My existing car hit 100,000 miles and just the repairs it needed at that moment would have run over $2000. So it was time to look. The last thing in the world I wanted was a van. For my last go around of car buying a hot sporty car sounded best, but ok, I got a bit more realistic. Then it came to SUV's. I loved the Hyundai Sante Fe but also liked the handling and spirit of the Ford Escape. But I had some goals and neither would make it. I measured. I checked vendors. I did everything. Nothing but a van would allow me to put a powerchair or scooter in it without removing the seat. And, the seats aren't light. By the time I must use a chair, no way I could remove the seat. In fact removing it would already be quite a challenge. So, van became my choice. Now, the carrying of oxygen is then another thing. For that reason if I was doing it over I'd get a swing arm lift instead of a flat lift like I got. With my lift all that will go in the back is the chair. So, at first I carried a liquid reservoir in one of the second row seats. Then, I just decided to remove the seat, put it in my closet (my third row seats fold under by the way), and strap my reservoir in there. Once I focused on what would serve me best, a van was my decision. Now, if I had owned another vehicle at the time with years left of use, I would have tried to make it work. For the chair, I might have gotten an outside lift. Although many vehicles are too light for carrying a chair behind. A reservoir will fit in almost any seat. If using cylinders and concentrators you can make it work. I do recommend coming up with a system and getting ties or padding or storage items to facilitate. I purchased a Hyundai Entourage. I actually got a rental with 20,000 miles or so but years left on warranty. I've not spent a penny other than oil changes on it. Its a great vehicle. It's the least expensive van (well it's sister Kia is the same price) and everything is standard. So, thats just one man's quest. > > > > > > > > Hi Folks, > > > > I have a dilemma. Guest guest
Andy/MB I had an Elantra like MB when diagnosed, just older and more miles at the time. But, I strapped a reservoir in the back seat and did travel with it too. > >> > > > >> > > Hi Folks, > >> > > I have a dilemma. Guest guest
No I dont think so just so long as you have room for everything. We have traveled in a van much more leg room and we can also carry more people if we go visit. We have also traveled in a compact car it all depends upon where you are going and comfort leval. When we are going to Phoenix which we could usaually make in six hours or so it didnt matter but when we have to go longer then comfort is more important..I am comfortable anywhere being only five foot tall but my over six foot dear husband needs to be comfortable since he is the main driver. If you can arrange for tanks to be used where you are going then thats better you dont know fear when you see a bunch of smokers near your car full of tanks... merry I count not a day complete till needle, thread and fabric do meet. 2009 will be mighty fine! Due to recent budget cuts and the rising cost of electricity, gas and oil, as well as current market conditions, the Light at the End of the Tunnel has been turned off.
