29 months, nonverbal is no longer NONVERBAL woohoooo

He is up to 4 words that he using often and correctly and often without

prompting :-). All in the last 3 weeks!!! And then today he nodded his head and

said yes (2 different times with visual prompting) and said HAT when I said

" lets wear a hat'!! I almost cried. I sure hope this is a sign of things to come

and that he doesn't lose them (did that before he was 18 months).

happy dance (but not much because I am water logged from drinking all this darn

water trying to loss weight)

Thanks for listening!!

Question~When someone says a person is non-verbal, is it like who had his

own " language " jargon or someone who doesn't make any words or sounds or can it

be used for children who speak but not communicate? Just wondering so I will

know going forward

Warm Regards

there's no real answer to this. it's mostly all personal opinion. if a child is

speaking but not communicating, is that verbal? technically, yes, but

realistically, no. i like to think of it more on how functional the language is.

if justin is starting to speak and communicate, a nice way to put it is emerging

verbally :)

Functionally non-verbal is someone who can't answer questions. They may be

able to speak but still can't use language appropriately.

I no longer consider Boone f\functionally nonverbal since he can answer

questions -- if he feels like it.

oh, by the way

Way to go, JUSTIN!!!

Putter can answer some questions. Some he does not answer, not sure if he

can't or won't. Anyway, how many questions do you have to be able to answer

in order to not be functionally non verbal (I was interested in this

definition).

Certainly Putter can answer " What do you want? "

I am interested in this, too... will answer " yes/no " questions

with fair consistency ( " yeah " and " nonono " ), and once in a blue moon

with a full sentence ( " where the heck did that come from type "

stuff)...but is by no stretch of the imagination

considered " functionally verbal " ...I'm just wondering what the

criteria are, and where he falls.

>>I really don't think you have to worry about him losing them again.<< What

Nonverbal refers to a person who cannot communicate effectively. I always

try to clarify and say that Ebony is completely nonverbal....she has NO

language. But even children who can echo and label are considered

nonverbal.

But that is great that he is picking up words. I will hope with you that he

does not lose these words and that he keeps adding new ones.
