Question~When someone says a person is non-verbal, is it like who had his own " language " jargon or someone who doesn't make any words or sounds or can it be used for children who speak but not communicate? Just wondering so I will know going forward < there's no real answer to this. it's mostly all personal opinion. if a child is speaking but not communicating, is that verbal? technically, yes, but realistically, no. i like to think of it more on how functional the language is. if justin is starting to speak and communicate, a nice way to put it is emerging verbally ~~~ Imagine all the people, living life in peace - Lennon ~~~ ------------------------- gina, 31, ny single mom to - kailey, 8, autism, hyperlexia, depression, anxiety, OCD, DSI trevor, 3, multiple developmental delays, no " official " dx yet parker jade, due 7-25-03 :-D

Guest guest
Functionally non-verbal is someone who can't answer questions. They may be able to speak but still can't use language appropriately. I no longer consider Boone f\functionally nonverbal since he can answer questions -- if he feels like it. oh, by the way Way to go, JUSTIN!!! Some he does not answer, not sure if he can't or won't. Anyway, how many questions do you have to be able to answer in order to not be functionally non verbal (I was interested in this definition). Certainly Putter can answer " What do you want? " Salli

Guest guest
Nonverbal refers to a person who cannot communicate effectively. I always try to clarify and say that Ebony is completely nonverbal....she has NO language. But even children who can echo and label are considered nonverbal. But that is great that he is picking up words. I will hope with you that he does not lose these words and that he keeps adding new ones.
