Guest guest
My GP doctor and my insurance company teamed up to send me to a clinical dietician today so maybe I can get my diabetes better in control. I don't want to eat all the time but have been having trouble with hypoglocemia. She is really nice and really encouraging but was overwhelmed when she heard all the stuff that make up my " et al " list. And then there are the steroids and all the other fun meds that add to the problem of weight gain. Their theory is it will help my lungs and heart. OK so they are probably right but my body is happy being fluffy. I even told her I was more concerned with being healthy than skinny. I just really don't want to stroke out from low blood sugar. So yeah I'm being whinny. I know everybody is just trying to take care of me and I should be more appreciative. She even told me I could have ice cream but ONLY half a cup. What fun is that? And I have a right-lung rattle and taking meds that make my stomach sick. Tomorrow will be a better day I know. Done whining now. Guest guest
,Don't feel bad, my insurance company has this 'personal nurse' program. Very nice people, don't get me wrong, but calling up at work to 'encourage me' in my weight loss or my diabetic control makes me want to stick a fork in someones eye! Why would I want encouragement from someone I don't know and will never meet! Idiots! I know they mean well but you are right, diabetes along with ipf (and our 'others') is a lot to deal with. I've been diabetic for 13 years now, it was my 1st major disease. Runs in my mothers family so not really a surprise (and I only weighted 140 when I was dx) I'll never forget one pulmonary doctor who was discussing my weight with me several years ago when I told him I probably actually ate less than him said that you know you are just a good genetic designed throwback. As an "apple" he said you are programed to add weight during the feast so you can live through the famine. Unfortunetly we don't have famines anymore. LOL Ever since then I've pictured myself outlasting all those skinny ninnies and dancing on their boney bodies ha ha ha. So do your best and then don't let them get to you (and get those med levels adjusted)!Dyane Phoenix ipf 02>> My GP doctor and my insurance company teamed up to send me to a clinical dietician today so maybe I can get my diabetes better in control. Guest guest
What I have found that works for me and its also a health way to eat is to eat six small meals a day. I eat breakfast then about two to two and half hours later sometimes three I eat a fruit and protien then lunch then a fruit and protien then dinner then fruit and protien. I always try and walk after dinner. That helps to relax and be ready for sleep and to also digest the food. Put your portions on a smaller plate that way it will look fuller. The first time you do this make up a plate like you normally would then get the salad plate and put hmmm try half of everything or less. Most of us have problems with belonging to clean plate club and our portion contrl...I use a baby bowl or a drinking cup for my ceral as you do not need to fill the bowl up but the portion looks so lost in those big bowls. I hope this helps you and you can write me off ling and will help all I can. It has helped me keep my blood sugars in check much better than others. hugs and blessings merry I count not a day complete till needle, thread and fabric do meet. 2009 will be mighty fine! Due to recent budget cuts and the rising cost of electricity, gas and oil, as well as current market conditions, the Light at the End of the Tunnel has been turned off. Guest guest
, Ok I do draw the line at corn dogs but then I grew up in Wisconsin where Chicago hot dogs and Milwaukee brats are king. Merry is right with her suggestions regarding plate size. Using a salad plate makes it much easier to fool the eyes, You probably eat fast also and learning to slow down so that your brain has a chance to get full too is hard. But hey we have PF WE can do anything! (trumpet roar, crowds shouting...fade to silence) have a great day! Guest guest
I’ve been good (sort of) so when I go to the fair and eat and eat and I won’t feel so bad. Elephant ears, Funnel cake, Curly fries, Roasted corn, BBQ and maybe a Meatball sandwich. I thought I read somewhere that you can only gain 3 pounds In a day. lol I might even try the deep fried Twinkie. This might explain why I’m not losing the prednisone weight. Got to love the fair!! Guest guest
Dyanne, Do you have Humana. That is my primary insurance and they have the same " personal nurse " thing. I found out that you don't " have " to participate. I stopped answering her calls. I finally told her I didn't feel comfortable talking to her,a complete stranger, about a disease she didn't understand and asked her to stop calling. Haven't heard from her since! 34 FL IPF dx 1/06 > > > > My GP doctor and my insurance company teamed up to send me to a > clinical dietician today so maybe I can get my diabetes better in > control. Guest guest
I can only imagine. It reminds me of after my VATS when Home Health Care was suppose to come do some checks for whatever reason I've yet to figure out. They first didn't show up. Then called and told me another day they'd be here. Meanwhile I'm one day from seeing my surgeon on follow up when this girl shows up. Ok, two strikes against her that she marinated herself in perfume and I couldn't breathe. However, I asked her what her purpose was. She said to check my vitals and educate me about my condition and also to educate me about my medications. I then asked do you know what disease I have? She said a lung disease, but not which one because she just got the papers. I said how will you educate me then? Well, I've got this book (thick binder) and I'll read from that section. Ok, just out of curiosity then I want to hear what you were going to read. She can't find Pulmonary Fibrosis, Usual Interstitial Pneumonitis, or Interstitial Lung Disease. Now, I say. So you would read to me if you had something to read and you're going to educate me about meds I've been on over two years? Yes. I sent her on her way, told the company they better not bill medicare and if they did I would report them for it. They didn't. End of their role with me. Still don't know their purpose, why prescribed, or anything else. Just know they weren't a company I would ever use if I needed help. > > > > > > My GP doctor and my insurance company teamed up to send me to a > > clinical dietician today so maybe I can get my diabetes better in > > control. Guest guest
blue cross also has an educational program i tend to ignore it i think the goal is to "educate" patients on medical/medication management so they can spend less money or doctor bills and meds that is my opionion last year i went to a new dermatologist he said that the insurance companies want you either healthy or dead -- nothing in between that they will have to pay for -- a bit of truthful sarcasm? Guest guest
Yep - they are the ones that roped me in. Right after they called to ask if there was anything to help me with my care since I have hit their " high cost " patients list. They have assigned me a personal case manager. How fun is that? Of course, I realize I should not be griping. It makes me sad to think how many of us have little or no insurance and little personal care. We should all be as blessed. Guest guest
I have Aetna managing my company's medical insurance and the Case Manager was a nice enough person to chat with. Her initial contact with me was when my Still's Disease was in full force. She was not really pushy and relatively knowledgable in the simple more common autoimmune disorders. It gave me an opportunity to educate her and over the couple of years when we had been in contact she actually seems to have retained it. Being on the Still's Disease Foundation, I have a vested interest in her someday actually being able to help someone else. She made it clear that I was obviously an informed " consumer " who knew more about my conditions (NSIP was added to our repitoure (sp?)) in 2008 and just like other commentaries here, they did not have much useful info. The good thing is that there were several times where she was able to push through authorizations for me that had gotten bogged down in their bueracracy. Anyhoooo.....in December, when I had a major flair of the arthritis components of AOSD (isn't it nice that my body only attacks one organ system at a time, my lungs were not impacted at the time, but could have if treatment had not progressed for the AOSD). She pushed through the approvals for me to have my Remicade infused at home right after my discharge. Considering I could not walk without a walker at that time, that was a God send. The usual approvals did kept getting shot down. So, helpful? In some aspects, yes. As far as advice, Bruce and MB and ya'll on this board are my primary resource for PF and my own research for my AOSD. You just need to know how and when to use these Case Managers, as we all know their real task is to save the Insurance companies some dough. Guest guest
It is a good thing to have people, even when it makes us whiney at first. I put my big girl panties on and am not whiney anymore. I celebrated my 52nd birthday on Thursday. It was a pleasant day. We had a nice dinner, went to DSW and I got 2 new pairs of shoes. No I did not need them but 80% off on the clearance rack for Life Stride and Anne Klein - how can THAT be a bad thing? Today is a good day. Enjoy. Guest guest
Thank you Tom for reminding me that anytime we can educate someone about IPF or some of the other diseases we all have, we should be patient. I really have a tendency lately to get annoyed too fast. I need to remember that not everyone has this great source of info - our group - that I do.And having an "in" with the insurance company is a good idea too:)Dyane Phoenix ipf 02> > > > > >> > > > > > My GP doctor and my insurance company teamed up to send me to a> > > > > clinical dietician today so maybe I can get my diabetes better in> > > > > control.
