I would be interested in what other vitamins and suppliments you all would

suggest be taken.

hugs

merry

I count not a day complete till needle, thread and fabric do meet.

2009 will be mighty fine!

Due to recent budget cuts and the rising cost of electricity, gas and oil,

as well as current market conditions, the Light at the End of the Tunnel has

been turned off.

NAC did nothing for me, so I quit taking it and have several bottles for anyone who can use them. I have had great success with Zyrtec, which is an OTC for allergies. My theory is that it is effective in controlling runny noses and coughing and that was my problem. After a month, my runny nose had dried up and my coughing was down to a few instances when I am exposed to high humidity or cold. I have been dripless and coughless for six months. I take one a day.

I take Zyrtec too. I found the generic at Sams club for $8 for 2 bottles. It

turned out to be an entire year supply and it works just as well for me as the

name brand.

I just discovered COSTCO also has a generic for Zyrtec which will also help me

save a few dollars. I've also switched from taking 2 Nexiuim per day to just 1

Prilosec recently and so far it is working. That is great since I am heading

into the donut hole in just a few dollars and to reorder a 90 day supply of

Nexium which the doctor had prescribed 2 per day would cost me over $900. :-(

You scare me a bit when you talk about the switch from 2 Nexium to 1

Prilosec, simply because the time when I thought my acid reflux was

cleared up turned out to be the worst it has ever been according to the

Endoscopy. Many of us don't always experience the symptoms as I've known

others with similar experiences.

Through my medicare prescription plan the full price of 2 Nexium per day

is as you said, over $900 for three months. I'm not suggesting you or

anyone else do it, but I now get my Nexium from India through one of the

Canadian pharmacies. It comes packaged in all Astra Zenica packaging

under the product name Neksium and is suppose to be identical. (There

are generics available in other countries but they would scare me too

much). I hated doing it but the price for 90 days supply at 2 per day

was $300 on my first order and on my most recent order was just over

$200.

Hopefully the healthcare bills and drug agreements with the

pharmaceuticals will go through as they currently appear to be headed

and at least our cost during the doughnut hole will be reduced to half

price.

Omeprazole is the generic for Prilosec, not Nexium. The generic name for

Nexium is Esomeprazole. It has two sides basically to it, one of which

is omeprazole. Generic Nexium is not available in the US. One Indian

Manufacturer was going to bring it here and test the legality of the

Astra Zeneca rights. However, Astra Zeneca essentially bought them out

of that attempt by agreeing to give them exclusive rights to sell the

generic one year before anyone else is able to. I forget what year that

will happen but its still well in the future.

Peggy,

Omeprazole is actually the generic for Prilosec. Nexium does not have a generic version available in the US yet.

Hi Judy,I live in the northeast corner of Ohio. I'm going to switch to Prilosec since my insurer no longer covers PPI's. The price of Nexium is way out of bounds now.Did you have your transplant at Cleveland Clinic? My understanding is that Nexium was produced when the copywrite protection on

Prilosec expired..that they are esentially the same drug. At my doc's

recommendation I am taking Prilosec OTC.

Ted

There were two points to the initial post. One was the change in PPI and

the other the quantity. A 20 MG Prilosec is essentially the same as 1/2

of the 40 MG Nexium, in that it is the same ingredient as the one that

makes up half the Nexium. There is considerable argument over whether

the other ingredient in Nexium benefits or not. From a doctor

standpoint, most will say Prilosec is a reasonable substitute to try and

see if it works. For some patients it doesn't work. On the other hand,

my doctor is of extremely strong opinion that due to the severity of my

GERD and the damage already to my esophagus, I cannot go to Prilosec.

However, I tried just to get a feel myself. Prilosec did not work for me

when I tried it and I tried 40 MG per day.

That brings us to another PPI point that while in the few comparisons

done Nexium does generally show as most effective, its not by a huge

margin. But also there are patients that any one doesn't work and

another does. Right now the hospitals here push Protonix, but partly

because they get lots of it free to promote it. However, many people not

helped by Nexium do go to Protonix and Reglan even though overall Nexium

may be more effective.

So the argument between Nexium and Prilosec will continue to rage and

the correct answer is probably makes a difference for some and not for

others. You are correct in terms of what Astra Zeneca did and I fully

expect that they have Nexium's predecessor all ready to introduce right

before Nexium becomes generic. Worldwide they have been sued many times

with settlements on most cases. Last year a company was going to fight

their US protection but they then entered into a long term agreement.

They have also protected themselves behind some very liberal laws in

Sweden. Knowing the way they operate and feeling gauged on Nexium, it

pains me every time I order any. But I do so to protect myself.

While there are many disperaties between drug prices in the US and

elsewhere, you'll find none greater than on Nexium. So Astra Zeneca

further takes advantage of the US market, the US insurance companies,

and us. Here is a price comparison of 180 pills or tablets:

US Nexium - $900-1100 depending on insurer. Over $1200 retail.

Nexium Canada - $450-600

Neksium India - $230-350

Generic Esomeprazole India - $100-120

The first three are the same product, all sold by Astra Zeneca, made in

the same type facilities and often the same facility. And it's 4 times

as much in the US as India. India would be the largest source of the

manufacturer of Nexium with Turkey also used a lot. Then in India you

even find the Generic cheaper. Now, I haven't tried it and am scared to

but its just there as reference.

Also note that in other countries the price difference between Prilosec

and Nexium is minimal and that I'm able to actually purchase Neksium

from India cheaper than I could get an equivalent quantity of Prilosec.

I would love to take a stand against Astra Zeneca, but not at the risk

of my health.
