Prilosec and Nexium

Ted,

They are chemically very similar but I disagree with your doctor that they are "essentially the same drug". They are both proton pump inhibitors and are FDA approved for treating GERD and other various GI conditions. Prilosec can be used in children as young as 2, Nexium cannot.

If your doctor wants you to use omeprazole (Prilosec) you might want to ask him to give you a prescription. I realize it's available OTC but it's much more expensive to purchase it that way if you have any type of prescription insurance coverage at all. I have Medicare Part D coverage through AARP's program and my generic omeprazole costs $7 for a 30 day supply. I take 20mg twice a day and even the store brand omeprazole would cost me much more than that OTC without a prescription.

Peggy

Unfortunately, I have two meds that don't come in generic, two generics

that are very high priced generics so push it toward the doughnut hole

quickly, one generic that I can get for $4 without using the insurance

and three meds that aren't covered by medicare at all.
