Ruthie,

I'm inclined to think that anyone who only reads fiction of a particular

genre is so narrow minded that their views hardly count! Sorry if that

seems harsh, but honestly! If I were to say to you " I only read novels by

white authors " , what would you think? I appreciate that orthodox Jews lead

a particular lifestyle, but it is not unreasonable to know that there are

other ways of living, and even to read about them!

Tell her you think she's being disloyal (and foolish too!) and then ignore

her. Children delight in tormenting their parents - that's probably what

she's doing!

The reason Avigayil only reads Jewish fiction is because she is *very*

religious (more than anyone else in my family) and doesn't want to

read anything which would be deemed unsuitable.(sex, violence etc.)

Jewish fiction, is, by its nature, screened from all that. That's why

I am to a large extent constrained by what I write about, to keep

within the guidelines. Even my crime novels are pretty tame

violence-wise by mainstream standards. Not too much blood and gore,

all graphic violence hinted at rather than explicitly spelled out.

I find it a bit scary if people do exclude whole swathes of

literature on principle. I had a friend who claimed to read only

women authors. It's one thing if you have found it boring or too

disturbing to read a certain genre, but it always seems uncomfortably

close to burning the things otherwise.

When I think of how long I avoided Terry Pratchett (because sci fi

isn't my thing) and Ruth Rendell, Ellis s et al because crime

isn't my thing... (pregnancy was what turned me on to murder, it was

all I wanted to read - *that* worries me. However it doesn't mean

that I approve of murder - and I don't suppose you do either Ruthie

and you write the stuff!)

True. But Avigayil is trying to avoid sexual references and other

things she deems unsuitable, and there ain't much " clean " literature

out there aside from the ones specially written to be so. :)

Heck I have heard rumours that even the next Harry Potter is going to

be about his sexual awakening :))
