Guest guest
Hi Everyone, Due to a series of issues, is back on the waiting list for an SLP. He is however going to school 15 hours a week (ABA). He is 2 1/2. While I think we only have 4 wk. to wait for ST, I would like to be doing things here at home. He has 4 words that he uses and tons of jargon " justinspeak " . He has not been Dx with anything beside autism and was 10-12 month delays in both expressive and receptive last fall. Any suggestions on things I can do, videos, books, toys, games anything??? Thanks everyone Warm Regards & ASD 11/25/00 in Maine --- Outgoing mail is certified Virus Free. Checked by AVG anti-virus system (http://www.grisoft.com). We have one of the BB videos and I had forgotten about it. I will get that one. What a great idea about the dollar store. Every where I look for " therapy items " AKA toys and such, they cost so much and looks to crumple things. Guest guest
Some thoughts .... *word bundles: pick five words, basic words, words from his environment, like cup, chair, cracker, that sort of thing, and work on them relentlessly, use sign language too for a visual reinforcement, get a tupperware box that contain these objects (cup, doll house chair, etc) for further reinforcement, once familiar with these objects, use them to introduce body parts like take the cup and say " cup, on head " and put it on his head, then " cup on shoulder " etc, this helps with body awareness too and n thought this game was hillarious, this also works well in the bathtub with bath toys *try working on kinetic words, use a step stool and help your little guy step up and down while repeating the words " up " and " down " - - this kept n amused for hours on end, weeks at a time, and he did learn the words, also " go " and " stop " are good too, you can hold your guy in your arms and do this, " ready, set go! " run a few steps, then shout " stop " and stop, kids love this - - also fun to do at the grocery store in the cart (these both help with discipline as they will learn " down " as in " get down " and " stop! " - - useful mommy phrases). *this is a good age to introduce the concept of touching something gently. get a variety of textured objects and practice moving his hand over them softly, say " gentle " or " nice " so that later, when your guy gets crazy and destructive you have a word to remind him to be gentle, a useful concept around pets and other children. *peg puzzles with themes like farm animals are good too for working on words, you can help him by guiding his arm to put them in (if he will cooperate) - - helps hand eye coordination and small motor, ditto for shape sorters. These may be too basic, since I'm not sure where your guy is, but we were also on an ST waiting list forever, and I have racked my brains for ST activities we can do at home. These things I mentioned worked well for us.
