Guest guest
Beth, I just had a colonoscopy a few months ago and everything went well. I did have to get my pulmonologist to give the okay because of the sedation. I did not have any negative reaction, but I'm pretty strong. I don't have any types of allergies and have always tolerated medications well either at the dentist, GYN, etc. I hope all goes well for you.. Adrienne Subject: OT colonoscopy questionTo: Breathe-Support Date: Friday, July 17, 2009, 10:40 PM I saw my primary care doc today...just a regular app't. We talked about my recovery from the flu and discussed the tests she wants me to have next. So we're going to schedule a bone scan and of course since I'm officially 50 now a colonoscopy. Now there's something to look forward to. lol What I've heard from everyone is that the prep is worse than the actual test, true? I'm also wondering what kind of sedation anyone has had with a colonoscopy. I had a very bad reaction to pre-op sedation when I had my lung biopsy so I'm very leery. I will have an app't with the GI doc in advance to discuss the issue and my primary suggested we might want to have an anesthesiologist present. I'm just looking for anyone elses experiences with this. The sedation is what makes me nervous about this..not the prep, not the test....just the drugs and my possible reaction. Guest guest
Adrienne, Thanks for the encouragement. The test itself doesn't really worry me at all. I'm not anticipating they'll find anything but if they do I'll cross that bridge when I get to it. As I said, the only thing that makes me anxious is the sedation and that because of my experience in 2006. Normal pre-op sedation dropped my sats like a rock and then they had difficulty stablizing them. They had an awful time trying to intubate me (who knew I have a narrow airway?) and I ended up on a ventilator. Ugh...it was no fun and I'm not looking to repeat this. I have no allergies either and have never had any kind of difficulty with medication. It's a matter of normal sedation and then the anesthesia suppressing my respirations and since I have no reserve there's no room for error. My sister told me after this experience that I should always be careful to explain to anyone who was going to sedate me in any way that I'm "sicker than I appear to be", meaning that just because I don't look ill don't take for granted that I can tolerate the same drugs that the average person can. Guest guest
Beth, I fully admit I'm weird, Ive had 3 colonoscopies in 5 years and except for the happy shot (valium or xanax my guess) I've never been sedated and in fact watched the last two on the monitor. Only one small moment of slight pain and I found them facsinating. Much more fun than the prep- now THAT is awful. Guest guest
Beth The sedation for the Colonoscopy is " light " but that doesn't mean much to me. As you know I also had sedation problems on my VATS and came out too soon. I had one of my colonoscopies in which I wasn't as far under as they thought as I could repeat back to them everything they did and every word said. Now, the colonoscopy wasn't painful so didn't really matter. You definitely need to talk extensively about the sedation in advance. I certainly will if ever sedated again for anything. The combination of needing to maintain your saturation plus the previous experience are issues to be discussed throughly. In Europe they often do colonoscopies without sedation. Some doctors will in the US. Deprivan is often used in the US and widely debated. In fact, Aetna will not approve it for a colonoscopy. Versed and Demerol or Fentanyl are often used. Now there is a push for Patient Controlled Sedation which would be much like the morphine drips often used after surgery. It's often done using Versed and remifentanil, an ultra short acting opioid. So there are plenty of alternatives. But, its not widely used. The debate is that on one hand there are fewer complications without sedation. On the other hand, there is some belief that the deeper the sedation the more thorough the examination of any polyps. So, guess all I'm saying is that there are many options and your doctors should be able to assist you in finding whats appropriate for you. > > I saw my primary care doc today...just a regular app't. Guest guest
Adrienne I never had problems either but that was before my VATS and the anesthesia problems there. I know Beth had the perhaps even worse with her experience. Until you've experienced a problem with anesthesia you can't even imagine. Now, a colonoscopy would not be intolerable without sedation and just with a sedative. However, i can assure you that waking too early (even partially) during a VATS is beyond anything words can describe. I remember not thinking I'd make it and wishing I'd died already so I wasn't having to experience what I was. > > > From: Beth mbmurtha@... > Subject: OT colonoscopy question > To: Breathe-Support > Date: Friday, July 17, 2009, 10:40 PM > > > > > > > > > > I saw my primary care doc today...just a regular app't. Guest guest
Beth, I had a colonoscopy last fall, as part of my pre-transplant workup. It wasn't my first...and yes, the prep is the worst part!!! Make sure you have a padded toilet seat!!! Anyway, this last one, because I am on oxygen 24/7, there was an anesthesiologist present for the procedure. He also met with me before the procedure. The only other thing different this time was that they pushed my oxygen flow up from my normal 2L at rest, to either 3 or 4L, I can't remember exactly, but it wasn't a big amount. No after effects...other than I was overly chatty with the nurses as I was coming out of the sedation!!!! lol Steve aka Knip IPF/UIP 9/07 VATS 12/07 57 Plymouth, NH > > I saw my primary care doc today...just a regular app't. Guest guest
I think it was two 'scopes ago that I rec'd max sedation and still was not sedated enough...could not give me more. Went home, no scope, went back to hospital next day and was just put 'under' for a few minutes. Now when I have a scope they just put me 'under' again and do their-thang... I'm thinking it's because I've been on pain meds for so many years and it takes more sedation for various procedures... I'm sure wherever you go or who ever does the scoop you will have discussed your concerns and they will be watchful MB. All this stuff we have to experience is stressful for sure. Guest guest
Beth, Remember when I asked my questions about IV sedation of Dr. and I forwarded them on to you? He said IV sedation is not general anesthesia. I had a colonoscopy with IV sedation in 2004, a month before I suffered respiratory failure after having general anesthesia for the gall bladder surgery. I had no problems with the IV sedation during the colonoscopy. I had the colonoscopy a year after the lung biopsy when I did suffer from the effects of the anesthesia. Ask your pulmo dude about IV sedation. I am curious as to his answer. Toodles! Jane UIP/IPF 12/1998 Dalton, Georgia aka pianolady_musicgirl > > I saw my primary care doc today...just a regular app't.
