Guest guest
Beth Now that is shocking but great news. Curious as to who ordered the barium swallow (assume an Upper GI plus some?). I haven't talked to my current gastroenterologist about the subject of upper GI's as he's never suggested one and my previous thought they were of little to no use even though my Primary did order them several times. Since they do not want to check my GERD through putting anything in my esophagus, might be interesting just to see what one would indicate. Also, never did the turning around in circles to slosh it bit....lol > > Hello all, > Boy efficiency is there middle name over there at Duke. I was scheduled to have my barium swallow at 9:30 this morning and we were actually underway by 9:20. > Bottom line? > After an hour of drinking barium, and going through a series of semi acrobatic contortions, then using the fizzy stuff and drinking water (reminds me of Pop Rocks, it's meant to fill my esophogus with air but then the tell me not to burp....who thinks this stuff up?) then lying flat and drinking more barium out of a sports bottle with a straw....then turning round in circles (to " mix the stomach contents " LOL) and lying on my left side, my back, my right side my stomach and on and on and on. After all that they found not a single sign of any reflux at all, much less GERD. > The radiologist doing the test was baffled which is why he kept going over it and making me do more stuff and drink more of that vile junk. But he could find nothing at all. He speculated that the reflux I had previously may have had more to do with the prednisone than anything else and now that I've been off for so long whatever was happening has stopped. It's as good a theory as any I suppose. > So I will talk to my primary about stopping the omeprazole. If there's no need for it, I'd prefer not to take it. > > That's it for now. Guest guest
MB, After all the tossing and turning around for the barium testing today, do you think you needed the rehab class? LOL I'd be absolutely exhausted just doing all that. I know rehab knocked the stuffing out of me. Glad to hear the good news about the reflux anyhow. It's so nice to see good news here. Guest guest
Hi Beth,I had my barium esophagram today and the x-ray doc said she didn't see any reflux, which didn't surprise me, since I am on 40 mgs of omeprazole. So either the med is working or the test is unreliable as speculated. Monday I continue on with more tests, at least when I'm done they will have exhausted every avenue of my esophagus and upper GI. C_53_Familial IPF_5/09WashingtonTo: Breathe-Support Sent: Friday, September 11, 2009 4:38:40 AMSubject: Re: Barium swallow results , I appreciate your input. The purpose of my having the barium swallow was to evaluate my swallow, the actual physical motor function of the cardiac sphincter and to check for the presence of a hiatal hernia. It is a basic, minimally invasive test and as such has it's limitations. I am aware of those limitations and so is my physician. Based on the results of this test my doctor may or may not order more tests. I've had my doubts about whether or not I actually have GERD from the very beginning. As I explained earlier this week, the only tests I had were when I was in NY and were done at the same time I was on high doses of prednisone and struggling with repeated fungal infections in my mouth and esophogus. I will wait and see what the final report from the doctor says. In the meantime I will continue to take my omeprezole until I find out it's safe to do differently. Thanks again. I have been reading about some of these tests for GERD and the Barium Esophagram is a poor test for documenting inflammation of esophagus and its unreliable in detecting reflux. Guest guest
, One thing to remember is that omeprezole is a proton pump inhibitor. It's going to reduce the amount of acid in your stomach. It's not going to affect whether or not you have reflux. If the cardiac sphinctor is not working properly, you will have reflux whether or not you are on something like omeprezole. (or nexium, or protonix, etc) And while a barium swallow (or esophogram) cannot detect damage or inflammation to the soft tissue of the esophogus, it can detect defects in the motor function of the swallow which would lead to aspiration, it can detect the presence of absence of a hiatal hernia which can cause reflux and it can give at least some idea of how well the cardiac sphinctor (the muscular ring that separates the esophogus from the stomach) is working. I'm glad to hear they saw no sign of reflux in you. As I said I won't change my medication till I speak to my doctor. I'm curious to find out whether he will want to test further, my guess is he will. But in the meantime I'm quite happy because there is a very good chance that I don't have reflux at all and if I did at some point it was likely related to the prednisone I was on at the time.
