I have also experienced the 'empty breasts' thing early evening with my first ,and ended up with him and me crying. My DH often ended up supplementing with bottle which cut the milk supply down further.Eventually we decided that when he had had a good feed on both sides and I felt there was no more ,we would put him in his cot a let him settle himself. This may sound cruel but it worked a treat, and then he would usually go about 4 hours by which time the milk had returned. We had a couple of bad evenings but then he seemed to adapt. We did the same with the second from the first days and had no problems. With the third I tried a different approach after reading up about milk supply in an NCT breastfeeding book.I accepted that he was going to be bad form about 6pm every night, and so I went to bed with him as soon as was reasonable leaving my spouse to sort other kids out and fed him in bed as long as he wanted. He usually fell asleep in our bed after about an hour and so did I.It meant I got a lot more time in bed every night, and he seemed to like it to.Downside was I did not see much of DH for first 6 months as I was always in bed by 7pm but I did end up with masses of milk-too much sometimes.
