LOL. > I am not totally certain that old movies have much to do with empathy. I tried to write this yesterday, but couldn't think how to word it. I am not an admirer of romantic movies in the sense of a love affair. For instance, Bridges of Madison County irritated me because infidelity was involved and I admire loyalty and fidelity, possibly above anything else. If someone is unfaithful to someone else, well, forget it. I won't like it. I think that they ought to behave themselves before someone gets hurt. That is where my empathy lies. An Affair to Remember just struck me as silly and manipulative (sorry to those that love this movie; I know they are legion). But the books and movies that I love are profoundly romantic, just not love affairs. One of the things that attracted me to Lou was that when I said Lawrence of Arabia was one of my favorite movies, he said, instead of not knowing anything about it, " Oh? But it's SO romantic. " And it is. But there are no women anywhere in the movie. Salli
Guest guest
> West Side Story is one of my favorites too, along with It's A Wonderful Life. Then there are a few that are not as old that really get me going ... The Champ is one. > An Affair to Remember with Cary Grant and Deborah Kerr leaves me a hideous pile of weeping goo. One comtemporary film that killed me was Bridges of Madison County. The day AFTER I watched it, I told my MIL about it -- and ended up sitting in front of my matzah ball soup in a downtown restaurant sobbing AGAIN!!! LOL.
