Guest guest
Stefani, Always request lidocane. It numbs the area very painlessly. they get the ABG and your not screamin.. I have always insisted..you CAN do that. It is your arm they are diggin in. Just tell them "OH NO not without lidocane... only way to go. All it takes is one bad digging and your done.. I DO KNOW. No more.. If they don't want to do it they are just lazy.. have them call your Dr. Love and Prayers, Peggy IPF 2004, FloridaWorry looks around, Sorry looks back, Faith looks up. While I was at National Jewish, I had one nurse do the ABG the first day and she was great... got it on the first try. When I went to do the exercise testing later that week, it took two nurses, multiple pokes on two wrists and they were unsuccessful. Oh well. I have ALWAYS been difficult that way. My mom (retired RN) says it is because I am overweight... the nurse said it is because my artery is well protected in my wrist structure. She said some people are just that way. Guest guest
Bernadette, Excellent advice and I'm not at all surprised to hear that doctors are the worst at this procedure and RT's the best. Experience counts for everything and docs don't do enough of this kind of thing to become proficient. That's why most hospitals have specific "IV nurses". They don't do anything but start and maintain iv's and in my experience get it right the first time or at worst the second time. When I was in the hospital in May on iv nurse couldn't get it done the first time and she called her supervisor to start my iv. She said, "I don't want to torture you." I was thankful that she knew her limitations.
