Hi Ingrid,

This bill is to stop the FDA from blocking TRUTHFUL information from reaching

the public about the roll of dietary supplements, nutrients & their effects. To

prevent them from blocking the publication of research & studies that show the

benefit to our health of such supplements & nutrients & the roll they can play

in fighting disease. To prevent the government from going after doctors that

have proven, effective, alternative forms of treatment that stray from

traditional medicine. For example, Dr. Budwig was nominated seven times for a

Nobel Prize & the Budwig Protocol is a proven, effective, treatment for cancer &

information such as this might be prevented from reaching the public. Dr.

Budwig was taken to court on several occasions & her protocol was found to be

scientific & with merit so she was allowed to continue treating patients.

Doctors with proven protocols might be shut down because fighting disease

without expensive tests & treatments is bad for business & the

economy. The public has a right to such information & should be able to choose

a treatment that they feel is best for them without govenrment interference.

The system is stacked against natural products being 'approved'. The

application fee to be reviewed for approval is more than $100,000. It takes a

lot of bread and apple sales to make enough profit to gain that back. However,

it doesnt' take the drug companies long to not only earn back the cost of the

filing fee and the research and development but also to make huge profits.

There is no way someone would buy a $5,000 bottle of vitamins - but these days

that's cheap for chemo. So natural products could not afford the approval

process if they were made to go through it.

And there are many cases where scientifically backed claims for a product were

forbidden by the FDA. I would suggest that you read the less inflamed materials

about such -rather than the materials that insist there is a conspiracy. There

may or may not be. But the facts stand on their own regardless of whether there

is good bad or indifferent motives behind them.

There is unfortunately all kinds of corruption, bad decisions, and such that

happens. Last week the Wall Street Journal published an article on chromium-6.

Seems that in the 1980's a Chinese researcher documented pretty thoroughly that

chromium-6 caused a huge increase in cancer. But when the research was

published in the US in the 1990's - under the same doctors name - it retracted

those statements. Turns out though, that what was published in the US wasn't

actually written by that doctor but rather some hired consultants here in the

US. And it wasn't based on new research or research at all. So the research on

chromium-6 being linked to causing cancer still stands.

What about the blocking of marijuana for medical use? We use barbituates

legally for medical purposes and those are way more dangerous. We use

anphetimines for medical purposes and those are way more dangerous. Yet

mariuana gets blocked.

The FDA is supposed to protect us. And largely does. But not always. Check

the filing for artificial sweeteners. Nutrisweet should never have been

approved. Yet it was. The research didn't justify it and in fact demonstrated

considerable concern about the safety of it. But not only was it approved - it

was approved on the fast track.

It is a difficult and time consuming trail to follow but it is all in publicly

available documents. The first dozen times you try to wade through the FDA

site to figure out what was approved or disapproved and why you may not succeed.

Keep at it. Eventually you will.

I am amazed that this bill has been introduced. I'll be more amazed if it

passes.

There are already rulings to keep unhealthy things out of our food (although

there are certainly huge numbers of unhealthy things in our food and water that

the FDA has approved too) - this ruling would keep the FDA from stopping health

information related to foods and supplements from being promoted.

I wish it were a perfect world and that the FDA did the job that we all believe

they are supposed to be doing. But if they did truly than the drug UFT would

have been approved for use here in the States with colon cancer patients. So

would thalidomide most likely. And a raft of other drugs.
