Do any of you have some type of medical home emergency/alarm protection system? I live alone in a rural area about 25 miles from the nearest hospital. Any thoughts or recommendations? C_53_IPF_5/09Washington-the-Evergreen-state

, If you don't mind telling where do you live? I thought it was Bremerton but maybe not if it is so rural. I lived in Port Orchard for 40 years so I am curious. I was also exposed to the asbestos in the shipyard there, I don't have an alarm system but I have been thinking about it because I also live alone and quite a ways from a hospital.Beverley Joy,71, UIP,NSIP 1-09,Diabetes,Sjogren's,Fibromyalgia IdahoSubject: Medical Home Alarm System? To: "Breath Support" <Breathe-Support >Date: Saturday, July 25, 2009, 1:09 PM

Hi Beverly Joy! What a beautiful name!

I grew up in Bremerton and still work in Bremerton, but last year I bought a

house on one acre in a small town called Grapeview between Allyn and Shelton.

It's a small one-level home and I love it! It's beautiful and quiet out here,

about 45min to Bremerton.

This was my final home purchase, I wanted some land with wide open spaces. I

rode horses as a young girl and 3 years ago I started riding again and rode all

summer long with a friend on her property. So, when this house on one acre came

avail last year, I was so excited, I had big plans to get my own horse to ride

for as long as I could and then teach my future grand-kids. But all that has

changed now. I couldn't even attempt to keep a horse and ride now. Even

maintaining the yard is difficult for me. My son comes out every Sunday to mow

for me. I not ready to sell my place yet, but the distance from everything is a

concern for me. I do have about 15 neighbors on my tiny dirt road, so I'm not

totally isolated.

Anyway, I hope I can meet you someday when you come into town!

We have a regular home security system made by Honeywell and our provider is a company called Vector.

We can arm it when we go out or when everyone is in for the night like a regular burgler alarm. The company is alerted if the system is activated and they call the police. The same thing if the smoke alarm goes off.

More importantly for me personally each panel has a medical "panic" button that if pressed will alert Vector to call the ambulance service. We had three panels installed. One in the front hall, one in my bedroom and one in my elderly parents bedroom.

The installation was free and we pay about $30 a month. It's not an unusual system, pretty much the same kind I've seen in tons of other homes. There is a certain peace of mind knowing it's there.

I have one that I purchased from the QVC web site for less than $100. You don't have to pay any monthly fee except for your normal phone bill. You enter emergency numbers that you'd like called if you're down, most likely starting with 911... You can also enter an emergency message that will play if you can't speak. It also has a speakerphone so that when you push the button, which you can wear around your neck or keep in your pocket, if you don't have the phone in hand, the speakerphone will kick in and you can hear whoever is on the other end and yell at them. It does a lot of other stuff. I don't remember the brand name but it was on QVC for about $99. I don't watch the channel, but I heard about it and went to the web site and there it was. There are little plastic waterproof cases if you want to wear it in the shower.

I hadn't really thought much about that until I was filling out a new patient form for one of my doctors and one question was: Have you been hospitalized in the past year? How many times? One of those things that make you go hmm.

The air here is no better today. Took me almost 45 minutes to get six bags of groceries the six feet from the car to the front door and then up one flight of stairs to the kitchen.

Joyce,

I agree and I keep my cell phone with me pretty much all the time and definitely have it in a pocket or something if I'm alone. Better safe than sorry, right?
