Guest guest
I take Guifasen (sp?) it has coedine in it, but it works when I have a bad coughing spell. There are other types you can try... ask your doctor for something or try an OTC. My appetite has reduced too, might be the medications, I eat small meals, but I need to lose weight, so for now its okay. Guest guest
Me too...sweets! Sometimes I just can't taste the food I'm eating and I just don't want to continue eating it. I think the Prednisone killed my taste buds...except for the ones that taste sweet! Guest guest
Hi Ginny, My pulmodude told me that as fast as my heart is racing, it will decrease your appetite. When I was dx I went from 156lbs to 102lbs in 6 weeks. That's what started my GP to get off his duff and believe me when I said something wasn't right. Guest guest
People with lung disease may lose weight both because it's uncomfortable to eat and because of the extra energy it takes to breathe. About 2 months ago I lost my appetite and didn't know why. Is this part of the disease of IPF? I have always woken up at 8:00 a.m. and went to the kitchen and fixed myself my regular breakfast of Hash Browns, 1 Egg and a slice of Ham. Now I wake up and have absolutely no appetite and by 2 or 3 p.m. I have to force myself to eat some toasts and about 8 p.m. I eat only half of my regular dinners. Again, is this part of IPF? Guest guest
initially i was told that nothing would help with the cough, but was given the "pearls" to pacify me the only thing they did was make me sleep i don't take anything for the cough i try to avoid things that make me cough -- like bending -- but old habits are tough to change if i'm not wearing o2, i will put it on and that will help stop the cough, especially while talking on the phone Pink Joyce R (IPF 3/06) IFA 5/09 Pennsylvania Donate Life Listed 1/09 Inactive 4/09 www.transplantfund.org--- Subject: Re: CoughTo: Breathe-Support Date: Wednesday, September 2, 2009, 9:50 PM The cough is one of the nasty symptoms of this crazy disease. I think each of us has found our own way to help deal with it. For myself, I take Hycodan cough syrup (for cough and pain,) Teslon pearls,Zyrtec and Singulair to keep allergies at bay. I use albuterol in a nebulizer or puffer when I've coughed so much my lungs feel raw (it helps with inflamation. )I also keep plenty of sugar free cough drops close by.As for loss of appetite, every patient is different. There are many who experience loss of appetite, and there are many (like myself) who have strong appetites. 34 FLIPF dx 1/06> >> >> >>From: tdip3kids <tdip3kids (AT) yahoo (DOT) com>> >>Subject: Cough> >>To: Breathe-Support@ yahoogroups. com> >>Date: Monday, August 31, 2009, 10:12 AM> >>> >>> >> > >>I was diagnosed with IPF in Dec 2006. Guest guest
Joyce, Why are some doctors such idiots, there is no reason to cough that much. I have an albuteral inhaler that helps me. Not only does it open the brochi, it calms the spasms. I always sound like Im full of mucus but Im not, simply ragged spasms so NAC is not a helper. Guest guest
i don't feel like there is any mucus causing the cough it is a dry cough before the diagnosis, the albuteral inhaler did nothing the triggers of my cough are things like drinking something cold, talking, bending, changing positions -- especially when i go to sleep -- i prop myself up with lots of pillow -- swallowing incorrectly i like the idea from Peggy's rt who during a pft gave her warm water to drink i do find that drinking something warm helps the best relief from the cough is to use the oxygen or to increase the liters per minute and stop what i am doing and rest btw -- the doc who gave me the pearls, made the diagnosis and discharged me saying he couldn't do anything for me and that i should contact Penn or Temple since they have specialized departments-- so that's what i did i do get these funny feelings in my upper chest, like i am short of breath but my sat is 98 so the pulmonary gave me flonase -- maybe it's a post nasal drip -- not sure if it works, but i use it anyway i like when the doc is honest enough to say that something won't work or that they don't know the reason or that the reason is unknown or that they can't help, but maybe someone else can there is so much that is not known about this disease, i do believe the docs do the best they can with their knowledge and experience the word "like" is incorrect, but i can't think of a better word right now -- i appreciate their honesty last year, there was an increase in coughing, it turned out to be the new blood pressure medicine, so one of the docs wrote to insurance to get approval for the old blood pressure medicine (insurance decided to stop paying for original bp med) docs have also recommended mucinex as needed -- rarely use it except for cold season or allergy season Pink Joyce R (IPF 3/06) IFA 5/09 Pennsylvania Donate Life Listed 1/09 Inactive 4/09 www.transplantfund.org--- Subject: Re: CoughTo: Breathe-Support Date: Thursday, September 3, 2009, 12:01 PM Joyce,Why are some doctors such idiots, there is no reason to cough that much.I have an albuteral inhaler that helps me. Guest guest
Joyce,I don't have any mucus either, my doc said my cough was brochial spasms. I get them anytime I try to do things too fast or like you said when your o2 drops for a reason like getting into my truck or trying to walk too fast. Or when I laugh, that one makes me the maddest. Sorry the inhaler doesn't work for you. I'm so glad it does for me. Guest guest
Pink and Dyane, Laughing gets to be a chore for me too. And it seems that from the hospital during biopsy and now, people have been trying their best to make me laugh, and mostt imes it can't happen. I still have that same sense of humor and ednjoy P. G. Wodehouse and nathan Winters. I am glad to find people who understand, but I'm sorry you are in the same fix. Maybe I shouldn't hold back, but so far I have found it beyond me to ask for Tylenol 3 Cough medicine or some other helpful med.
