Hi,

Look into Care.com it is a very good website. I have help now, but I often

wonder about what I would do if I didnt have my mom to help me.

system to help you with the maintenance of your home, what do you do?  I live in

a very old house that I want to sell, but everytime I turn around something

seems to be going wrong.  A big issue for me is cleaning and just needing help

in disposing of items.  Please let me know what you do because I need to figure

out a way to clean out this house.

I use Care.com and have found excellent reasonably priced help. Many

also use craigslist although you do need to exercise extra care in doing

so. In small towns you'll find newspaper ads (In major cities on one can

afford to use the newspaper to advertise these services). Now, as to

helping with house maintenance, my ex mother-in-laws church has a group

that has helped her several times. Always good to check with local

social services.

My best help has come from either stay-at-home type mothers looking for

a way to have an income but wanting to be home for the kids when they

get out of school or college students. Our current housekeeper who comes

once a week is a graduate student working on her PhD in Psychology.

While she's not as expert as some professional housekeepers, she is

smart, pleasant and very willing to do those things out of the scope of

normal housekeeping services.

One other thing that I once considered before deciding to rent a house

with (and using the savings to afford a housekeeper) was that of

a potential housemate/roommate with maintaining the house in exchange

partly or all for rent. Now, if you're not careful, that could be scary.

On the other hand taking your time and carefully qualifying and checking

the potential roommate, drawing up a proper agreement, and spending

enough time to get comfortable, this could work quite well. Think of a

single teacher for instance or a widow or others who might just be a

good match.

Now, I'll toss one other group of ideas out. If you are old enough for

some senior apartment complexes, many of them do have those extra

services readily available at very reasonable costs. Then last this does

bring us to the issue at some point of considering an Assisted living

center. It's worth researching in your area as a potential fallback even

if something you don't think you'll ever do. You may find just knowing

that there are options out there and they aren't as bad as you imagined

provides some comfort. Now you sort of have a worst case perspective. To

me it was just better researching it all while I was relatively healthy.

Ultimately, I leased a house with my ex-wife and that affords us a

housekeeper (found her on care.com) once a week and a handyman (found

him on craigslist) as needed. We used the savings of sharing to pay for

this. But, I had evaluated all the other choices and was prepared as a

single person in your situation had we not decided to do this.
