Guest guest
Yesterday at the library my 4 yr 8 mo son was playing with a puzzle in the children's section. A mom came by with her son about my son's age and a toddler daughter. The boy sat down next to my son and asked my son " Will you be my friend? " He had to ask twice (I wasn't watching too closely for fear of ruining the moment so I'm not sure my son heard him the first time). My son looked at him and said " Yes " in his very unclear apraxia way which comes out more like " ah " . They both parallel played a bit. Awww! God bless that nice little boy. It sure beat last Sat when my son walked up to two boys his age or very slightly older and waved at them while standing in front of them and one of them said " You're a retard! " (Blessedly my son ambled off and didn't understand what " retard " meant.) As they get older the differences are more noticeable eh? Guest guest
I think that is the 'big' message that I was trying to make clear..... and you said it so simply! YES. As they get older, our children become more and more different from other kids..... unless they get a ton of therapy and really work those neural pathways. This is true especially if they have global dyspraxia and not just the apraxia. I had no idea that the other kids were calling Mark " Retard " until he asked me one day in a shy, pained voice in grade one.... " Mom, am I retarded? " My heart literally broke in two. We have been honest and open with regards to the dyspraxia ever since. Now that we have done home therapy with NACD for the last year and a half..... Mark is beginning to be like other kids (no longer stands out) but it has been a tremendously long road and I do wish that I had gotten that type of help when he was really, really little. It would have saved us literally years of pain and hardship.
