Joyce Rudy AZ IPF Paper added to files regarding GERD Hi Everyone,I am what you would consider a lurker and although I read theforum every day and laugh and cry with you all I do not seemto participate.I was diagnosed last year with UIP although the diagnosis on theCT scan said unusual instead if usual (is there a difference)My question is in regards to the paper because I seem to fit itto a tee, no heartburn except very occasional in the middle ofthe night.Has anyone used Omeprazole or the over the counter Prilosec.I am going to take the paper to my family doctor to see if heknows of any side effects to taking the "stuff"Seems to me something is better than nothing and the only medI am on is NA.My last Ct in April showed minimal change from the year before.Thank you God!!Hugs to allCharleenLondon Ont. Guest guest
Charleen, Because of cost I use the OTC Omeprazole from Wal-Mart and it works for me. And my IPF was definitely caused by reflux according to pulmo dude and GI dude so I think it's a good bet. Guest guest
Hi Charleen,I was talking to (one of Dr. Raghu's nurses) yesterday and she told me that all over the pulmonary research community there is research being conducted on the reflux and IPF. There are papers due out soon from Michigan and California and others. I'll try to get those as they are available and post them on the site. My CT has changed for the first time since I was started to be tracked in 2007 and this last time did not include any 'new areas of infection' and every previous CT did show 'new areas of infection'. The only difference is that I am on omraprazole 20 mg. I am hoping that it isn't just a coincidence but I am not going off this drug to find out. Each time an area heals, scar tissue is left in it's wake so stopping the 'new areas' is critical to stopping the disease progression. I am really new to this disease myself but I just feel like there was a 'reason' why we moved here and I through a personal friend was referred to Dr. Raghu who was a real pioneer in the GERD, ILD relationship. Evidently in 1997 when he first published a paper on this he was criticized by a lot of the pulmonologists in the world as being far fetched but it is being accepted and others are doing their own tests so it'll be interesting to see what each different study shows. Are you being followed by a pulmonologist? I sure hope you are working with someone good and have at least been worked up at a premier site. We all deserve to work with experts in the field.Good luck and let us know how it goes for you.Peggy E.
