Guest guest
> Does anyone know what type of naming ceremony is available other than a > religious one... Yep! We had a naming ceremony, well we called it a naming celebration, for Jude on the bank holiday weekend. Husband and I made a very short speech, including the birth experience, how Jude got her name and then said we wanted to appoint mentors to offer her guidance/advice. We asked the mentors to plant a tree (a small-ish magnolia) that could grow with our daughter. We had several toasts (pimms and lemonade), one to Jude after talking about her name and one to friends and family, after appointing her mentors. We kept it all very light-hearted. My favourite part, was that we said on the invitation 'you are welcome to bring a small momento to place in Jude's 'Memories Box' which will be re-opened on her 18th birthday.' I am not one for all of the ornament type things you get at a usual christening and asking people to bring a momento was fabulous. We had photos, family histories, histories of locations, mobile phones and train tickets, stamps, a bottle of Cristal champagne which will stil be drinkable in 18 years, a gold sovereign, newspapers and magazines from the day, my own personal favourite was a wind-up music box that plays the song 'Hey Jude' and much to everyone's delight and/or consternation depending on who they were, a few big fat brown envelopes which are not to be opened for another 18 years (from great grandparents who may not be around then.) Having a box is also good if there are important people that cannot attend. We also asked everyone to sign a record book and I asked my BIL to take a photo of everyone, so photos can accompany all the messages. There is also space in the book for more messages and photos in 18 years time. In to the box I have placed - cord clamp, obstetric summary, newspapers Jude has had her photo in and the newspaper my wedding photo was in. her scan picture and a photo of her dad at a similar age. The NCT newsletter where her birth story was published and some hand and footprints she has done at nursery. I am now working on a written recollection of the naming celebration and a scrap book of her first year. It is all immensely good fun and everyone commented on how thoughtful the whole thing was and how they felt included. Have a good one! They make both their rooms look very attractive (or would do if we'd actually got around to unpacking 's yet). I also love the useless little ornaments I was given when I was Christened, which I have now passed on to my children. Very special things to me. Guest guest
Liz, that is such a lovely idea! I wish you'd posted this message about a week ago, as it was my DS3's Christening yesterday (which was lovely), but yes we did get all those ornament type things. Our friends were very kind to have bought them (probably because I was so useless in coming up with any ideas), but they really don't have much use around the house or for the children, and of course this is the third set of these sort of ornaments that will start to gather dust in the loft. On the plus side, DS1 and 2 (aged 4 and 2) have suddenly discovered real money so instead of going out and getting them moneyboxes, I " found " some in a long-forgotten box and they are greatly enjoying musical moneyboxes now! Another friend is having her son christened on the 16th so I may suggest this to her if it's not too late. Hannah What we did. Guest guest
What a great idea. On a different, but similar note, my mum bought DH a millennium capsule back in 1999 -it came with sheets for each family member or friend to complete a prompted history of themselves. Mum even kept the newspapers from 1/1/00. But sadly, it is still sat on the worktop in my kitchen. One day, I will do something with it Todman Treasurer, Stansted Branch (R5) Mum to , 3½ > My favourite part, was that we said on the invitation 'you are > welcome to bring a small momento to place in Jude's 'Memories Box' > which will be re-opened on her 18th birthday.'
