Guest guest
Hi everyone, I'm off to the NC mountains for a couple of days to visit with my son. Packing myself, my oxygen and my little dog up and we'll be leaving in a couple of hours. I will have internet in my hotel room so I'll be checking in tonight but I will be less attentive than I normally try to be. See you all later! Guest guest
Hi Bruce and Beth, Tanks so much for your info. I currently have a concentrator that I use while in the house. I also get liquid oxygen for my helios when I want to go out. The problem is that the helios only lasts about 5 hours at my 2.5-3L, so this limits my traveling for a quick overnight trip or a 4-5 day trip. I have made arrangements with my oxygen company when I've gone for longer periods and have been accomodated, but I don't think I always need the big tank of oxygen for short stays. I read that Beth carries her concentrator, which is a good idea, however I can't actually lift mine down a flight of stairs and then down a few more to get out to the car. Oh I'm so perplexed. HELP!!! Subject: Re: Comin round the mountainTo: Breathe-Support Date: Wednesday, June 17, 2009, 8:39 PM AdrienneAlways for travel as Beth says, have the prescription. I have mademany copies and am never without several. I've gotten my reservoirrefilled in a couple of other cities. Plan just in case your supplierlets you down or you find some tanks empty or your concentrator breaksdown. Also, for flying or altitude, take into consideration theadditional required. Beth has likely turned hers up a bit forBoone. She mentioned ER. When I started traveling people would ask, what ifsomething happens on the road or you get sick or condition worsens. I docarry my medical records as well and if something were to happen, I'd goto the nearest facility. I even sort of thought it out if I had time todrive that along my major trip, Tulane, UAB, Emory, Duke, and Vanderbiltwere always there for me. I did have something strange with my elbow popup (ER thought Gout but I think just infection) and I dropped into theER in Sanford, NC (urgent care doctors were all closed for memorialday). Also, plan to allow yourself flexibility. Take enough so you can changeyour mind and stay an extra day. My longest road trip to date was 17days and 3700 miles of driving in total. Oh my....it was great (did getto have lunch with Beth too). Anyone who worries about handling theequipment and getting a concentrator or reservoir in and out, I was onewho never asked for help before. But, I've gotten it everywhere I'vebeen and not only do the people at the hotels do it graciously, theyhonestly seem to get some pleasure from helping you. I've met someincredible people just because of needing help with my oxygen. Guest guest
Adrienne You have an interesting combination. I don't know what size reservoir you have for your liquid. However, here are some possibilities. 1-Have your provider put a liquid reservoir in your auto for the trip. If the one you have is small enough it could go or another one. A 50 pound reservoir (weighs about 95 full) will fit easily in a car seat, strapped in by the seatbelt. You can then use it directly while driving and take it in wherever you go for night plus use it to refill your Helios. Depending on your usage when stationary and when sleeping, it might well last the entire trip. If not, you can get it filled while gone. 2-Take your concentrator. Surely there is someone who would carry it down. If not, get the oxygen provider to load one into your car for the trip. You could also get a reservoir loaded but if you didn't want that much, get them to give you some cylinders just for the trip. If there is a small charge for the cylinders since that is out of your norm, it shouldn't be too much. 3-Get a Sequal Eclipse from your provider for the day or four or five you're traveling. I say that model because you need continuous for sleep. With enough batteries it will support you. They might loan it or might charge you for it. Biggest thing..don't hesitate to ask for help and more from your oxygen supplier. Now, ask the manager, not the driver. Explain your desire to travel and suggest these ideas but solicit from them as well. As to needing the big tank, you certainly need the reservoir or an alternative for a 4-5 day trip and i would think even overnight, just to fill the Helios the next day. Don't feel like you're asking for too much. If you get more than you need, then thats fine. This is your life. Don't let yourself be restricted. Discuss your issues with them, such as not being able to get your concentrator down to the car. I know we feel like by asking them to bring a reservoir or bring something different for an overnight trip we're making them do a lot but if thats what it takes, then just do it. They'll actually be impressed at your activity. By presenting your issues and asking for their help, they will feel committed to helping in most cases. > > > > > > From: Beth mbmurtha (AT) yahoo (DOT) com> > > Subject: Comin round the mountain > > To: Breathe-Support@ yahoogroups. com > > Date: Wednesday, June 17, 2009, 12:43 PM > > > > > > Hi everyone, > > I'm off to the NC mountains for a couple of days to visit with my son. > Packing myself, my oxygen and my little dog up and we'll be leaving in a > couple of hours. Guest guest
Adrienne This is just a question of curiosity. You're using liquid for portable. Why then are you using a concentrator rather than a liquid reservoir for your house? Is it by choice or because the provider chose? Main reasons would be to lessen their costs and to lessen deliveries which you have to be home for. However, you are incurring electric expenses that the liquid wouldn't have. A reminder to you and others, those electric costs are tax deductible and can be fairly easily calculated. They run anywhere from $20 to $80 per month depending on your concentrator, usage, and electric rate. > > > > > > > > > From: Beth mbmurtha (AT) yahoo (DOT) com> > > > Subject: Comin round the mountain > > > To: Breathe-Support@ yahoogroups. com > > > Date: Wednesday, June 17, 2009, 12:43 PM > > > > > > > > > Hi everyone, > > > I'm off to the NC mountains for a couple of days to visit with my > son. > > Packing myself, my oxygen and my little dog up and we'll be leaving in > a > > couple of hours. Guest guest
Pink/Adrienne While the Helios Plus (the small one) is adequate for some COPD patients, it rarely supplies either the level of flow or the amount of oxygen a PF'er needs to be active. It also gives more trouble as far as freezing. I'd advise anyone to ask for the Marathon over the Plus. > > > > > > > > > > > > From: Beth mbmurtha (AT) yahoo (DOT) . com> > > > > Subject: Comin round the mountain > > > > To: Breathe-Support@ yahoogroups. com > > > > Date: Wednesday, June 17, 2009, 12:43 PM > > > > > > > > > > > > Hi everyone, > > > > I'm off to the NC mountains for a couple of days to visit with my > > son. > > > Packing myself, my oxygen and my little dog up and we'll be leaving > in > > a > > > couple of hours.
