Guest guest
Jo Ann, Such good news!! I'm so happy that you are finding such a big difference on the oxygen. It feels like a miracle doesn't it? But if you think about it what we were doing before we got the oxygen was like trying to get our cars to run without gasoline. A car needs fuel to run and humans need oxygen to live. Since our lungs can't process enough from the atmosphere we need supplemental. And yes I've left the house without it, you are not the only one. I've actually gotten in the car and driven all the way to the store before I realized my mistake. This happened several times in the beginning, not so much now. Although I have tried to leave the house still attached to my concentrator. Not too bright huh? I'll also echo what the others have said about using the O2 when you sleep. If you need it during the day, it's very likely you need it at night. Ask your doctor for an overnight oximeter and that will tell the tale for sure. Guest guest
Jo Ann The way to resolve it is very simple. You do an overnight oximeter test while on the CPAP. If the doctor won't endorse that, you really need a new doctor. As to them not looking at test results from elsewhere, very proprietary. And, you really need an oximeter. You're guessing at your day time needs when it would be so easy to know what they are. There are many complicated things about the disease, but determining whether there is a need for oxygen at night or how much is needed for activity during the day is not complicated. Unfortunately, it seems your doctor has made it so. > > > > > > I just started on 02 2 weeks ago. I feel soo much better that I call it my New Best Friend. Guest guest
Jo Ann Has the sleep center done an overnight on you yet with the CPAP to check how you do on it? If so, that would also show oxygen levels. If not, then there is no way he can know whether you need a test or not. Plain, simple, fact. I can't know. He can't know. Then there is no reason whatsoever not to do an overnight oximeter with you on the CPAP. The CPAP may well force enough air in to keep the oxygen up but no way to know without testing. I just can't understand why a doctor would be so uncooperative with a patient as he has consistently been. It's your choice if you accept that or not. I would be seeing a new doctor, personally. My pulmonologist would not speak kindly of your experience. As to the problem remembering to put it on, I don't know any of us who have needed oxygen but not needed it for sleep. Now some have used CPAP at night with oxygen through it and then switched to oxygen for day so thats similar to what you are dealing with. Its a matter of developing the habit. To me there are two signals that remind me. One, shortness of breath. Two, a look at my oximeter. I mainly encounter when I sit and turn the oxygen off, then stand and forget to turn it on. But I realize very quickly as ten steps would drop me to 85% or so. > > > > > > > > > > I just started on 02 2 weeks ago. I feel soo much better that I > > call it my New Best Friend. Guest guest
Jo Ann, I have to chime in here and agree 110% with Bruce. You really need to give serious consideration to finding a new doctor. I find his refusal to give your requests consideration downright frightening. This is the same doctor who only agreed to oxygen when you had the proof from rehab that you needed it? Correct? It would appear that he's not taking you seriously and it baffles me. But regardless of any of that the only thing you have control over is yourself. Either you accept this type of treatment from him or you look elsewhere for your medical care. My advice if you asked would be to run, not walk to another pulmonologist. Guest guest
Had VATS 7/22 and the surgeon prescribed O2 at night now and it is so WONDERFUL I don't feel as depressed and tired all day. But I still get out of breath, B/P going up along with heartrate when I do anything during the day. Should I ask for it at post-op checkup? At all checkups so far, this has happened in the office with sats going down to 88 and then rising within 5 minutes. Or is the fact that sats don't stay in 80's an indication that I don't need it during the day. I'm very confused.- nne > > > > I just started on 02 2 weeks ago. Guest guest
Anyway i did not know you can get more than 5 liters of O2 until i joined this group and read numbers like 25 liters. Of course, that requires differnt eqipment and wearing a mask of which I am trying to get accustomed. Lincare came and provided two large liquid O2 reserviors. He placed one in the back of our vehicle so I would have plenty of oxygen for the 3 1/2 hour trip. I am learning a lot and look forward to healthier and more comfortable days. If I go without oxygen or don't have it turned up high enough to meet my needs, my sats will drop but time passes before I actually feel different. I found out the hard way after my biopsy (06/05) that I was doing myself possible harm by trying to "tuff it out". That's probably one of those unhealthy male attitudes we find ourselves strangled with. When I gave in and started using as much O2 as I needed, I started improving and feeling much more like doing what I knew was good for me. I have learned doctors don't have nearly enough time to prepare us for all we will have to face. 30 minutes every 4 to 6 months is hardly enough time to educate a patient. I am so thankful for this board. Had I known about this board 4 years ago, I would have know the way. Guest guest
Yes, Beth, Often my hose comes unattached and I just go about doing my business and don't realize I don't have oxygen and it makes me wonder if I truly need it but when it is reattached I feel much better. I just don't seem to "feel" the difference until I start to gasp. Yes, I too think that my body has adapted to the lack of air. Guest guest
Beth, I'm going to ask for the 24 hour oximeter test. I never had the 6 minute walk test - can I get that this week or do I have to recover longer from VATS. I thought the worst was over but I did something really stupid tonight and lifted something over 5 lbs. My incision really hurt for a while and my son yelled at me " it's time we helped you for a change, just sit and rest! " . I really should have asked him to help me- something I find hard to do- I can't get used to the fact that I have limitations. Thanks for your advice on O2. > > > > > > I just started on 02 2 weeks ago. I feel soo much better that I call it my New Best Friend. Now when I go to Pulmonary Rehab my sats stay in the 90's. > > > > > > I want to thank everyone of you who suggested I call my Dr. myself instead of waiting until my PR was over and they sent the report to my Dr. I still have 2 weeks of PR yet, this means I got a 4 week jump on them. THANK YOU. > > > > > > I still have the problem that I forget to put my 02 on in he morning. I will get up in the morning an start doing things around the house and realize that I'm having trouble breathing then I will remember my 02. Sometimes I even go away from the house and forget to take it, then I have to go home and get it. Soon, hopefully, I will remember it all the time. Did anyone else have this problem when they were on 02 w/exertion only? > > > Have a nice day everyone. Me and my Best Friend are off for the day. > > > > > > Jo Ann 53 MI UIP 9/07 > > > > > > > Thank You again everyone. I was Dx in Aug. 08 with Sleep Apnea. I have a CPAP machine. I asked my Dr if I should be using 02 at night also and they told me No. Once again I will take your advice and call my Dr. tommorrow and ask again if I should be using 02 at night with my CPAP. > > Oh how I wish that all doctors would get with the same program and treat everyone the same so that we wouldn't have to tell our doctors when we need something, they should know, they are the ones that went to school to become a doctor. > > Bruce; no I don't have an oximeter. I had one but my Granddaughters bit off the button. I used to use it and I would tell my Dr how low my sats were dropping and he always said that wasn't possible because they weren't that low when I was in the office. I kind of quit using it because he told me it probably wasn't right. I have since proven to him that it was right. I am trying to buy another one. > > > > Could someone please tell me how to set up my signature so that it comes up automately so I don't have to type it everytime I post. > > > > Jo Ann 53 MI UIP 9/07 > > >
