It isn't the same kind of med as prozac (SSRI)...risperdal is an atypical anti-psychotic (works to balance out seratonin and dopamine levels). There are side effects...lots of sleepiness at first (gets better as he adapts to med)...weight gain ( gained almost 30 lbs before he leveled off, but is not gaining now, and has gotten much taller, so he is actually sort of thinning out)...there is some evidence that it may impact heart function, so EKG may be requested at some point...overall though, research is finding it to be relatively safe (definitely better than the old anti-psychotics) for use with people with autism (some recent research indicated problems with use for dementia in elderly because of increased risk of CVA). Dunno if that makes you feel better or not... Raena
Guest guest
Hi Kerri! The Zyprexa the boys are on now is in the same family of meds as yours. My skinny little stick boy is now 106lbs and grew almost 2 inches since January. He's wearing regular jeans now. has filled out as well and is only one size smaller than . They are both doing wonderful compared to last summer, although we're tinkering with the doses again after seeing the Dr. earlier today. I hope you have as great of luck with it as we have!
