Guest guest
Yes, good point. He also has the language delays and some sensory things. His vocabulary is advanced but he cannot use the words appropriately and his pronunciation is very poor. (Though not as poor as 's.) i.e. he will repeat pretty much anything you try to teach him, or pick up the sign for it very quickly, but he can't pull the word out when he needs it ( " Gabe, what's that? " " Whassat? " " What is that? " " Wha issit? " " It's a truck! " " Cuck! Yeah! Cuck! " ) and doesn't use them to communicate needs or wants. Socially I really don't know. He seems very engaged and responsive, but really only has parallel play with other kids. I'm not sure if he's supposed to be beyond that yet or not. I asked his ST yesterday and she wondered if he is picking it up early because of 's obsession. *sigh* She did point out that he is not unduly obsessed with letters and numbers, and this is true. But I still do not think he should be lining the dishes up and counting them. Thanks everybody! -Sara. > At under two years of age I think the ability to " name " every > single letter > and number is less important than the " fascination " with the symbols. > Remember speech and language problems are also an indicator of hyperlexia. > > Sissi

Parallel play is pretty normal until around three, even three and a half. And none of my kids had as much speech as Gabe seems to have already, not Sophie and not . Happy birthday! > three, even three and a half. And none of my kids had as much speech as > Gabe seems to have already, not Sophie and not . Oh, that is good to hear about the play. I haven't looked it up or anything yet. I am not terribly worried about the speech, as he clearly understands the purpose of language and has the desire to communicate; he just isn't able to access the words when he wants them yet. But he will undoubtedly get there, especially with the ST - she is a very good match for him and we like her a lot. And he picks up signs just like it is supposed to work, using them for a bit and then adding the word soon afterwards. We will have to make a point of signing with the new baby from early on. still has no real understanding of the purpose of language, though he is quite good at communicating what he wants, heh heh. But it is still all hand-leading and the tried and true " guess-and-whine " method. His echolalia is increasing lately and I am hopeful he'll take another step forward soon, but...Yesterday he got to " thomasthetankengine.com " by himself (I think he picked it out of the history) and Matt said, " I don't understand it. He can read but why can't he TALK? Talk, dammit! Talk! " piped up, " Talk! " Well anyway. I could ramble on for pages, but I have a poopy diaper to change, and it's either hot in here or I'm, well, 9 months pregnant. Thanks Salli. -Sara. Guest guest
Salli, I think it's fabulous that he can write out what he can't say!! Doesn't that make you think of Tito? The boy from India who can't speak but can use written language to communicate very well? Sue
