Guest guest
> So for those who know the area, >would there be more point in trying to reach survivors via an underground >(subway?) route, rather than digging down through tons of debris, A NY fire officer said on CNN last night that he had just come out from the basement two floors below the building - he'd had to come out because they were expecting more collapse. He also mentioned something about some tunnel but I have to admit I was really following it as I was trying to read the ticker tape news at the bottom of the screen. -- Sue
Guest guest
In article <001401c13c9b$4d443e40$4a837ad5@campbellsmith>, campbell smith family writes >First of all, I know nothing about New york apart from current news, but >having been glued to 24 hour news since the atrocities happened, I have come >to the conclusion that the most likely people to have survived would have >been on the ground or below ground levels. So for those who know the area, >would there be more point in trying to reach survivors via an underground >(subway?) route, rather than digging down through tons of debris, while >there might be people who are save-able deeper down? DH said last night (and I don't know where he heard/saw this) that subway workers had gone into the tunnels underneath and just been met by a wall of rubble - presumably the whole subway system underneath had also collapsed as a result of the weight of the building falling on top of it. Maybe we just see them digging 'down' because that's what we can see on TV. And don't be embarrassed, because I had the same thought. But you wouldn't want any of their tunnels to collapse, either... Guest guest
This is a public posting of people who worked in or near the WTC and have been seen or heard from since Tuesday, which may be helpful for any of you who have friends or relatives who can't get news. I can't get hold of one friend - I know she wasn't there (or I hope she wasn't), but her husband may have worked near there. He's not on this list, which is huge. http://home.ny.com/wtclist.html Hannah
Guest guest
I know a lot of my climbing and Mountain Rescue (SAR) friends have gone to NY to help with the rescue - apparently they needed people with specialist knowledge of dealing with old injuries and lowering/raising casualties in difficult positions. And a climbing friend from California was saying that, of the 7 specialist earthquake rescue teams in that state, 5 are now in New York helping out and advising on structural issues. Another climbing friend in NY was saying that a way we could help, from overseas, is to donate clothing to the Red Cross who are, apparently, co-ordinating this.
