I have been reading several articles regarding proposed mass screening of UK

Further to that I have ordered one online at

Does anyone have any comments or experience of these kits?

I realize that a colonoscopy is the gold standard, but would this test in a

way be a good first

step to getting the general public more aware?

The fecal occults have extremely high false positives and false negatives and

can at best pick up something like 18% of colon cancers. And they cannot

discriminate between the 1000 other things that can cause bleeding.

We don't recommend that they be used for screening. Used as a general health

test, sure. Bleeding is an indication that something is wrong. And should be

attended to.

For a short discussion on them:

These were promoted as a 'test for colon cancer' in

the US several years ago. All the test actually

determines is a presence of blood in the stool. This

can be a sign of colon poylps or cancer BUT there are

also a myriad of other conditions that also produce

blood in the stool and, often, colon poylps do not

produce bleeding. The most common condition causing

rectal bleeding is hemorrhoids, followed very closly

by stomach or intestinal ulcers. Needless to say, a

lot of people became scared to death thinking they had

cancer when they did not, and worse, many avoided

having a colonoscopy because they thought they were

okay until it was too late.

Bottom line, occult blood kits have their place but

not as a sole determinent of colon poylps/cancer.

Colonoscopy isn't just the 'gold standard', it's the

ONLY test currently available to view the entire colon

and locate poylps/tumors early. Even colonoscopy

misses a small percentage in the early stage, but it's

still the best we have.
